Filling in p85 leaving the UK

I have been told I need to send hmrc a P85 along with my P45 to finalise my tax status and get any refunds I may be owed because I am emigrating. I want to know though if this is just a formality most people don't bother with or if I HAVE to do it? I will be full time working abroad for more than a year so I ft the category of people who need to fill in this form, but not sure if I need to bother really since I can claim back any tax up to 2017...?
