Cheaper gas/elec unit price elsewhere?

Options
I'm on Npower Dual Fuel with Bill Saver E7, just went to a comparison site and that tariff isn't listed for comparing with others. Does anyone know if the following electricity and gas tariffs are ok(this is my current rates and i'm trying to reduce them!):

Standard Units 1st 728Units kWh. 28.200p/kWh(ex VAT) Amount £203.90
Standard Units Next 703Units kWh. 18.000p/kWh(ex VAT) Amount.£125.66
Night Units 386Units kWh. 6.220p/kWh(ex VAT). Amount £23.84

My gas is:
24 Hour 1st 3,811Units kWh. 6.684p/kWh(ex VAT) Amount £253.46

24 Hour Next 50 Units kWh. 3.686p/kWh(ex VAT) Amount£1.84

Its impossible to say, because prices vary from region to region and actual energy use varies from household to household. Plus there may be people here who are on fixed tariffs which aren't available to new customers.

So what is the best deal for me or somebody else, may end up costing you another £100 a year if I was to recommend them,

I would use more than one comparison site, in fact what the heck, use them all

Its possible that your existing tariff doesn't exist for new customers any more, and so it isn't referenced, then again it may magically appear on a different comparison site.

You obviously know your consumption, and can see the current cost per unit on your bill, so just compare that with the best deal shown consistantly through the various comparison sites.

In relation to your Electricity, you don't seem to be using many night (off peak) units, certainly not enough to warrant having an E7 dual tariff meter and be paying more for daytime (peak) electricity

(E7 users are stung with stupidly high daytime rates in return for a very small, slowly dwindling overnight off peak rate saving)

Personally if that 386 units is representative of your night usage, then i'd be considering moving over to a single rate tariff, where on tier 2 you will pay around 10p - 12p per kw/h day and night, rather than the 18p you are currently paying during the day.

I'm guessing that your heating is Gas and not Electric?

  • Yes, thanks for your response, my heating is gas. I'll see what I can find on comparison websites and update the thread. I contacted them and they advised I also get a dual fuel discount which would be £55.00 for gas and £45.00 for electricity. Argh, will see if the lower electricity unit price for moving over makes an impact *sigh

Since you aren't using overnight Storage Heating you'll certainly save money by moving to a single rate meter rather than the Economy 7 two rate tariff which you have at the moment.

I calculate from your readings that you used a total of 1817 units (KWH) on your example readings, which currently cost you a total of £353.40 across the 3 tiers

If you had used those same 1817 units on a single tariff rate of say 11p / kwh the total cost for the same consumption would be £199.87 which even with a fixed monthly or quarterly standing charge added, would still save you money over the E7 tariff.

Don't assume, use a comparison site to compare.

If the tier 2 rate is 18p per unit, you won't get it for 11p on the equivalent single rate tariff

Firstly you have not mentioned discounts(dual fuel, payment by DD etc) which can alter the picture with various tariffs.

At the moment Scottish Power seem to have the best Economy 7 rates for most districts. This for the Midlands

    Pricing Details

    Breakdown

    Electricity

    23.713 p for the first 225 kWh
per quarter, and 13.491 p thereafter

    Night unit
    charge (pence per kWh)
    n/a

    6.005p

    Gas

    Unit charge (pence per kWh)
7.041 p for the first 670 kWh per
    quarter, and 3.610 p thereafter

    Discounts

    Dual fuel discount of
£10.50 per year. Online discount of £10.50 per year.

All prices shown are inclusive of VAT
    at 5%.

The difference in daytime units is huge. With Npower you pay 18.9p/kWh(18p +VAT), with SP(Midlands) 13.49p/kWh.

However you really need to use the comparison websites for your specific details. In particular see if a single rate tariff would be better than Economy 7 and if getting gas and electricity from different companies might be better.

Be aware that you will not "earn" any of the 'deferred discount' unless you complete 12 months of direct debit payments. Also be aware that the comparison sites include the discount (that you may never earn) in the reported cost.

Just use any 'existing' tariff for comp site comparison purposes. You already know what you are paying now, the point is to get the comparative data on alternative cheaper tariffs.

Don't assume, use a comparison site to compare.
Religiously using comparison sites is great, but if two deals are within say £20 - £50 apart its also well worth using your eyes and a little effort too, as a true money saver would be finding out whether either of the top 2 or 3 suppliers are offering additional cashback deals.

To my knowledge, many of the comparison sites do not include the various cashback incentives offered by other entities in their results.

They would hardly do that, since it would deter people from switching via their own sites!
The rule does not change; find the best tariff with a comp site, then switch via a cashback site.

  • Finding it a bit difficult to compare as the compare websites eg (gocompare) weren't supplying unit prices for Kwh.Hoping to come off the economy 7 tariff as my main energy source is gas and i dnt use enough electricity at night to cover the higher costs as other forum users have pointed out. Is there anywhere that shows these companies deals with unit prices in Kwh or have i missed something x?
