Pay for repair not done?

Hello. Several weeks (!) ago I left our second car which is used-but-not-as-much as first car into garage as the heater wasn't working. Included was the bit needed (had planned to do it myself but then doubted I could/no time to) Since then I have been told that the bit wasn't working but they were trying to fix it etc. The car has been so long tax/insurance/MoT all expired so had to SORN it. Have now replied to a message from garage that they would try to MoT it over the weekend (before Christmas) me saying...don't bother with heater repair...just MoT it and I'll take it heaterless.
Question is: apart from any MoT work am I obliged to pay for efforts to repair heater if they haven't done it? and should the heater part be returned? I can at least resell it on a 'not working' basis, if indeed it is. Apologies for post length...just wanted to present all the facts.

If you supplied the part and told them to fit it and it doesn't fix the problem either because you misdiagnosed it, gave them the wrong part or the part you supplied was faulty, you're liable for the bill for all the labour and consumables used.
If they do the diagnosis, order the part and it doesn't work, fit or solve the problem, they foot the bill.0 -
I agree, You gave them the part and said fit this. Your bill.
If you took it in and said the heater doesnt work. You wouold pay for them to diagnose it and cure it. If they dont do either properly then you shouldnt pay.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
