RBS Bank Charge

Hi all wondered if you can help, I have just checked my RBS account online and noticed next month there is a £54 charge for being overdrawn 9 days, feel this is rather unfair as I was £6.24 overdrawn and therefore £0.24 over my limit. I have no overdraft and am very carefull with my account and if funds were not availiable RBS should of rejected the transaction.
Surely they cant charge me that for being 24p over my limit?

Their charges are fixed, and no - the decision to pay is at their discretion, not yours. The relevant charges will be shown for your account type. Check online. You cannot be 'careful with your account' if you permitted the O/D of any amount after close of business.
If they rejected the debit that took you over (per your suggestion) that would incur a bounced debit charge, and probably one from the firm taking the money!0 -
I was careful with my account I check regularly making sure funds are always availiable and if funds were not then surely when I used my card to make the purchase that took me 24p overdrawn would of failed. All this for a loaf of bread, and I have a balance reciept before I made the transaction stating that funds were availiable.0

Which is why you have been charged for having an unauthorised overdraft.am very carefull with my account
How did you end up spending money you didnt have then?and if funds were not availiable RBS should of rejected the transaction.
And for every person who says they should have bounced the payment, there will be another that says they should pay it. If you put the decision in the hands of the bank then they have to make a judgement call. They may not have had the choice if it was guaranteed payment that took you over (like a debit card transaction).
You cannot claim the moral high ground here. However, if it is your first error with them (or first for many years) then they will usually be sympathetic if you ask them to refund stating you made a genuine error.

No. Unless the transaction was large enough to be checked against balance or part of a random sample then your balance isnt checked. It also explains why they could not bounce the payment as it was a guaranteed payment.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). your harsh lol, thanks, for your input, will contact them via phone tomorrow afternoon, had 2 return direct debit charges with them both for british gas who attempted payment on wrong day
I realy did check my account before I made the transaction guess something had not gone through system when I checked.

cashpoint machines are not reliable for providing reconciled balances. They will give you a potential balance or a balance at close of the night before (depending on the bank). However, it is always best to keep a figure for yourself to include any pipeline transactions that have yet to go through. A balance obtained by other means wont tell you what has or hasnt gone through and remember a debit card transaction does not always check the balance and even if it does, it could be that you had the money in the account when checked but by the time the transaction comes off your account, another transaction may have gone through in that gap between using the card and it coming off your account.your harsh lol

Hi all many thanks for your replies. Contacted RBS by phone and spoke to the conplaints team who were very kind. They explained the situation regarding the terms and conditions and as refunded the charges as a "geusture of good will" and warned me that next time the bank may not be so helpfull. Thanks for all your posts.

You can no longer complain about charges being unfair. The OP spent the money, that is not in dispute. The bank has done nothing wrong. The OP is totally dependent on the goodwill of the bank to refund the money. Most will on first time mistake by the account holder. However, if you go in with a fighting attitude you are more likely to be rejected as you less likely to get the goodwill of the staff member you speak to.
