  • I am not fussy about a design, as simple as carolina or downing street style will do for me.

Have you got any idea what price I can expect for such doors?

I will be cheeky regarding a composite door.

View at B&Q . Get a retail price with any loyalty discounts etc then try to get hold of a price from the Tradepoint side (I cannot tell how much they might vary - this is variable). It will act as a good guide to judge others.

Just accept there is a very limited range in the trade catalogue and quality does vary with manufacturers.

    Trust this helps

You could have one made similar to the "cottage M&T triple glazed.Price wise ,off the top of my head a door and frame,pre-hung with locks,56mm thick, boarded both sides, celotex core ,bespoke made about £1800-00+vat so not cheap.

But not the Carolina as this is a panelled door and you can't sandwich Celotex between the panels. It can be constructed from solid oak but made thicker than the standard 44mm thick, so a 56mm thick door will be pretty good thermally wise.

If money is an issue or the house doesn't really warrant a bespoke Joinery made door I would go for a composite and I'm a Joiner..:D
  • Rockdoor is one of the most thermally efficiant doors on the market. The Ultimate Rockdoor range is A rated as standard. Other manfacturers claim to have an A rated product, they do but with massive limitations, you can't have any glass, must have a pvc bottom rail etc. These manufacturers can not improve their energy rating as they do not make the door sash, they import it from the far east. Where are you based? maybe I could recommend an installer of A rated doors in your area.

In the interests of fairness.... my Doorstop composite door fitted last year was A rated. In addition, I sought advice from Doorstop and was told they manufacture their own slabs in the UK. The price was competitive - it undercut the Far Eastern slabs too. Supplied and fitted for under £500 if I remember correctly.
  • You are correct on 2 counts Doorstop do offer an A rated product. Its my understanding however that its a solid door with no glass. The product like many others has a cassette glazing system this causes air leakage thus making it vertually impossible to achive an A rating. Secondly Doorstop have the machinary and know how to make slabs they choose not too. They import like most others at a set size and then cut it to down, its probably cheaper to import the slab than make it here in the UK.

My certificate is not to hand. It might be their triple glazed door is A rated but this does not come with the pattern glass such as red diamond. If so, I have this pattern so my door may be not A rated.
