£50 reserve--why??

Why do ebay insist on a high reserve price when the item is not worth that much??I don't understand
Can someone explain it to me please?;)

Perhaps the person selling isnt sure of how much there items are worth and put a high reserve on them to see how much they might get if they sold them ?????????

sorry my post's not very clear:o .I listed an item to sell,I want about £30,so set the start price at 20-I was going to put the reserve in at the £30 But ebay wont accept a reserve of less than £50.---Stupid or greedy:eek: Maybe I've misunderstood:o

Unfortunately the reserve has to be a minimum of £50.00. It never used to be like that. Before you could have any amount. I'm not quite sure why eBay changed it.

Stupidly high minimum reserve = higher start price = more fees.

    Simple.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

but you don't want 20, you want 30

set the start price at 30 and don't bother with a reserve.

Have never seen the point in reserves myself. Just start the bidding at the lowest you are willing to accept, simple really.

It's the greed of ebay, not the sellers.

Since the reserve fee paid is not refunded even if item sells I would have thought that if ebay were being greedy then they would allow reserves or any amount as it would increase their revenue?

Like others have said if you want £30 then start at that price. However, watch the band increases, it is considerably less to list at £29.99 than it is at £30. Also, it costs the same to start the listing at £29.99 as it would to start at £20 ..basic costs for a non media item is 75p

  • It's not quite as simple as that though, well, not if you consider it from a "psychological" point of view.

A popular £50 item with, say, a £19.99 starting price would probably fetch a higher price than the same item listed with a £40 starting price. The psychology of it makes people think that they could get a bargain because it's "only" on for £19.99 so add the listing to their watched list and keep bunging a higher bid on every so often.

If you're faced with a £40 starting price then your head is subconsciously telling you that £40 is a lot of money for a starting bid and "it'll probably go for a lot more than that so I won't bother bidding" etc.

You've got to choose your starting price carefully. If it's too high you won't get any bids and if it's too low then you won't get what you want for it (stating the obvious I know). The time you end your listing will also play a big part in the above too.

    ;)
