Hi I had no insurance on my car and I sorn it on 11th December 2012, I haven't sent the tax back as I can insure it tomorrow, so it still has tax on it. Can I just ring up dvla tomorrow and take the sorn off and drive it?

It's my understanding SORN will only take affect once the disc has expired0

When does the tax expire? The tax disc is still valid so you can use it on the road.gonnabedebtfree wrote: »Hi I had no insurance on my car and I sorn it on 11th December 2012, I haven't sent the tax back as I can insure it tomorrow, so it still has tax on it. Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

It's not SORN'd until you send the tax back surely?
What does http://taxdisc.direct.gov.uk say your status is?0 -
OP I'd be inclined to do what you've said. It's better to err on the over cautious side than be in breach of the law.0

It is my understanding that sorning the car makes the tax void,so if you dont claim the tax back you lose it.To unsorn a car you have to tax it afresh,https://www.gov.uk/register-sorn-statutory-off-road-notification,scroll down to the bottom of the page.0

I don't think the tax is ever void. You've paid for the tax so it's valid unless you claim it back by returning the disc. SORN can be used to keep the car at your property if it's NOT taxed.0

AFAIK
When you SORN your tax becomes void, infact you should not SORN unless you do return your tax for a refund. SORN without returning the tax is a bit of a grey area it could render the SORN declaration void.
Unless you send it back before the end of December for a refund using V14 form you will not get a refund for January and February.... When you have insurance and MOT and you want to re tax you will have to buy tax from the start of the month, So you should wait until January before re-taxing.
However you cannot get a refund if you re-tax within 21days of a SORN, and that would be 3rd of January, so if you re taxed from the start of January albeit from the 3rd of January - you may not get a refund.
What you should have done....
You should have just taken it off road and not SORN it...if you knew you would re-insure it soon.....Unless you were forced to SORN it by DVLA as they had sent you a letter warning that if you don't you would get a fine?...In which case what were you doing driving an uninsured car for so long that the DVLA had to write to you? (No sympathy)
What you should do now
Phone DVLA and ask them if you can cancel the SORN -as you still have the tax disc-, if they say "no".... ask them if you return the tax disc before the end of December, -i.e. post it today- (they should be open on Monday 31st December to discuss this) will you get a refund for JAN & FEB. Then point out that you intend to re-tax in January and point out that 21 days from the 11th December is the 3rd of January, if you get a tax disc on the 3rd of January will the mean you get no refund for the previous disc due to the 21 days rule.
In short you should have asked here first before declaring SORN.0
