Why not held at the place of work? I always think interviews not at the place of work are a bit dodgyBob_Blighty wrote: »Hmmmm as initially thought it looks as if the Daily Mail readers brigade are ganging up on me. It didn't really concern me who I was taking on but since you ask I think it's 3 eastern europeans and 7 British
Today was the only day I could make it this week and needed them to start either on Monday or Wednesday next week. I am the only one qualified to conduct the interviews, held at short notice in a hotel conference room which was hired. As I say surprised all of them made it in especially as it is still a bank holiday. You have to admire their keenness and enthusiam about them wanting to workWe’ve had to remove your signature. Employers can hold interviews on Boxing Day. It's just generally not wise to do so because any applicant relying on public transport can't make it. You're also a horrible person making others attend a work interview instead of enjoying Boxing Day.
Someone isn't a "horrible person" just because they hold a job interview on a Bank Holiday.
On the wider issue, in my experience at least from interviews, very many people make a huge effort to get a job. I've also seen over the years many people who make less effort to get a job who haven't done so through laziness, just because they've lost confidence in themselves.0 -

I needed to recruit due to a sudden last minute order for 10 staff at a factory, doing production line work in a short term contract role. The agency who I recruited through sent me what they thought were 10 suitable candidates for the role, all of them were currently out of work. I held the interviews today. I expected one or two of them not to turn up but all of them made it in for the interview.
Apparently 2 of them came to the interview cutting short their christmas break and one of them made it in suffering from awful flu like symptoms. Another had walked in 4 miles and had no transport and I was reluctant to take her on but she said she was quite happy walking the 8 miles every day. I was taken aback by the keenness of all the applicants. My standard stock question which I asked all of them was "When can you start?". 3 of them replied "I will start now if You want too" or similar words to that effect. Another guy told me that he was that keen to work for me that he said "Give me a weeks trial and If I am not any good Don't Pay me ". One other candidate who when I mentioned we would be paying NMW even said that he would work for less if it means he got the job so I just smiled wryly
I Have to commend the positive attitude and keenness of all of the candidates I interviewed as being a lurker on this section of the board for a while the unemployed do tend to be given a hard time particularly by many of the Daily Mail readers brigade. I look forward to all of them starting next week
Fantastic news!
How lucky you are to have been sent 10 applicants who not only turned up but also had immacculate attitudes and work ethic!
Amazing.
Wonderful.
Briliant.

I wouldn't want to employ anyone thick enough not to realise that the NMW is not something you can negotiate down!!0

Yes lol if you could even call it that! It was literally a drive to the site where they were hoping to get a contract, drive around it "this is what we're doing, thats where we'll be building it, this is what you'll be doing and yes you've got the job".
I look back and realise he was a cowboy but at least it gave me hope back then lol0 -
an excellent strategy for finding suitable employees i think - make the application process as awkward as possible. Do interviews on sundays, holidays, weird times of the day, create odd or difficult to understand application forms and websites to apply with.
Only those with determination and resourcefulness will apply.0 -

Probably a light hearted remark as they might have just wanted to test the employer out and show they were keen on doing the job.
It's a good job that the NMW does exist as the employers would be paying their employees as little as they can. Remember that the NMW currently is about 3 to 4 times more then the average wage in countries like Poland, Romania and Lithuania hence that is why they are over here0 -
Some employers do pay less than the NMW though and what can you do if you can not find another job.Probably a light hearted remark as they might have just wanted to test the employer out and show they were keen on doing the job.
