Buying Mattress Online - Advice

Hello & Merry Xmas
I am looking to purchase a King size divan bed with a pocket sprung + latex/memory foam mattress and with the sales starting, what better time could there be! (I prefer Latex).
I have been reading a number of mattress related threads on this forum and have distanced myself from the big retailers based on solid words from Tim. Based on my MSE research, for the benefit of anyone else in my situation, here is a summary of the key things to look out for:
Also, can anyone comment on the quality of mattresses bought from MattressShed, Sleep King and King of Cotton? These are some sites I discovered but there aren't many product reviews on them.
I am aware that MattressShed do a Breasley Flexcell Pocket 1600 Mattress; I would welcome your views on the quality of this mattress.
Thanking you

- Avoid high street retailers and opt for an online store
- Avoid reflex foam encapsulated springs
- Go for pocket springs between 1000 - 1800 (for a King)
- Go for full size steel springs

Mattress manufacturers have different names for the same products in different outlets, so comparison is impossible.
You need to try them, BHS and John Lewis shouldn't be dismissed based on MSE threads.0 -
I would be surprised if they would take a return if it had been opened. Bedstar have a good reputation based on online reviews. I found them efficient, and they do a Saturday delivery. A lot of these shops get so many poor reviews.
Perhaps you should wander into John Lewis early one day, and lie down for a few hours.Seriously I went to Furniture Village (embarrassing, I know), and the salesman told me to lie down for at least 5 minutes on a mattress to assess it. Extend that to 1 hour, and you might have a decent opinion on a mattress.

Hello There, I did lots of searching etc, and at the end guess what I bought an amazing mattress from IKEA lol
Basically its their top of the range mattress, bigger than king 160 x 200 cm
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70156352/#/70156347
I think together with bed and side tables, headboard etc came to £900 I am very pleased with it.
I was let down by the next day delivery (in store) but they refunded me that cost.
Edit:
I went and had a lie on them at the Lakeside store and to be honest, wouldn't buy online when you can get for the same price at IKEA, but just be careful to make sure is the size you need!!0 -
I've ordered from https://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk a few years ago, they have a 'love it or return it' guarantee for up to 30 days after it's delivered (as well as a normal manufacturing guarantee). Our Love It or Return It Guarantee is such that if within one month you are not satisfied with any item - We will collect and you will be refunded in full. No small print or any of that nonsense

There's loads of articles on the website about how to choose a mattress, I felt like a mattress expert after reading them and watching some of the videos! Overall, very helpful owner and comfy mattress!0 -

John Lewis actually have some good offers on and are generally known for their quality products, but after reading peoples views on threads I am a little turned off. Maybe you are right though, I am reading too much into the forum!0 -

My only concern is that they don't sell normal UK sizes, so would not fit a divan bed. I don't think ikea sell divan either.0 -

Thanks. That origin pocket latex 1500 looks good. No images of the beds though which is a shame.0 -
We bought our mattress from Bensons for Beds. Bought in store, got home and read horrific reviews about them - but actually couldn't fault them. In-store service good and delivered what they said they would, when they said they would. So as others have said, don't write off in-store purchases (also gives you the chance to haggle - we got money off and free delivery in-store).
I don't think I'd ever buy a mattress online unless I'd had the chance to try it out anyway. We spent nearly an hour trying two different mattresses out in Bensons. They were absolutely fine with that and let us get on with it.0 -
I agree , Bensons were the only ones where I could properly test matresses and the are labelled in grades of hardness
Dreams were a nightmare , sales people did not understand the concept of "no , I don't want you to geve me a sales spiel , just leave me alone" so we left without trying anything
agree its a must to try a mattress for realEx forum ambassador

I agree regarding both Bensons and Dreams. When I walked into the Bensons store I was given a bit of advice regarding how they graded the firmness of the mattresses and the difference between open coil, pocket sprung and memory foam and then I was left alone to try as many as I liked for as long as I liked with only a "shout if you need a hand".
Service in store was very good and I got free delivery and a free mattress protector thrown in too so cannot fault them.
Dreams on the other hand were a nightmare. I got stalked around the store even after I said specifically that I just wanted to try out a few and I would ask when I was ready for extra help/sales. I wasn't left alone for one moment to actually relax and test the mattresses so I walked out with no sale and went to Bensons instead.
I would vote for John Lewis as well. They were incredibly helpful without being pushy, it just happened that they didn't have anything I was 100% happy with in the price range I was after at the time.0
