On 24th December I received a letter from another bank stating that they had mistakenly paid £450 into my bank account. I have checked my account, and sure enough, the deposit was made at the beginning of December.
No, you wouldn't receive ANY letter from another bank about your own account.
Any letter you may have been received would be from your OWN bank.0 -
The other bank may have sent the letter to the OP's bank for onward transmission to the OP?43580

I questioned this also but the OP states "On 24th December I received a letter from another bank " which seems unbelievable to be honest as this would surely be breaching Data protection if their own bank gave out details hence my comment about possible money laundering as no mention is made as to who this bank is.
This is why phoning them would be the best course of action but perhaps also speaking with their own bank first to confirm what/where this payment came from would also be wise, was it paid in by cheque/cash or direct bank transfer?
As for the comments about knowing your account I can accept this if the amounts were small but come on if your account balance was over £450 you would know something is not right.
Something just doesn't add up :think:0 -

Rude arrogant and wrong. What a loveable combination. As it happens, Hazzanet has identified the correct answer.0 -

Jeez, the trolls in here are really hungry. When did it become acceptable to openly accuse someone of lying without any particular evidence? Either accept my question at face value (which just so happens to be the truth), or kindly go away and troll someone else's thread.0 -

In post number 2 the OP says that this was a standing order that should have been cancelled.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -

A bit strong, don't you think, to come onto a forum and accuse established members of trolling just because they express their views and/or ask questions.0 -

If they had expressed relevant views or asked questions, then yes, it would have been a bit strong. Notice I have not taken issue with your previous comments, nor with JuicyJesus for suggesting I should pay the bank extra for having spent money that was not mine. All valid points.
Accusing me of lying, however, was provocative and off-topic. Trolling. Look it up.
Just because they were here before me doesn't make them right.0 -
Calm down - or direct your anger towards the countless folk who have appeared here before you with all sorts of stories that you could, sooner or later, drive a cart and horses through.
Many longer-standing members are automatically cautious when a newbie comes along with a post that leaves room for questions. More often than not these newbies turned out to be trolls.0 -

I can vouch that more people than you think don't check bank statements
Sounds like you work in NatWest customer services.
Typical conversation:
"I've just looked at my statement and I've noticed I'm being charged to have a bank account! This is outrageous."
"Yes you've been charged because you have an Advantage Gold account. Have you not noticed the charge in any of the statements we've sent you in the past 5 years?"
"You can't expect me to keep a track of every transaction on my account. I never even knew I had Advantage Gold."
"Have you not received any of the several letters we've sent to you about the account over the last five years, telling you about changes to the rate and the benefits on offer? Surely you must have known you had this kind of account?"
This will then continue ad nauseam.
P.S. Sorry to hijack the thread.
I believe the OP is genuine.0
