Windows 8 'vs' Windows 7?

Now that Windows 8 has been out for a bit - for those of you who've used both 7 & 8, what do you prefer & why?

Personally i can't stand the layout of Windows 8. I hate the mobile phones that look like Windows 8 too - all those squares. Total rubbish. This is just my opinion though & i appreciate many find it refreshing. I on the other hand absolutely hate it.
So on that note, if i was having Windows 8, i would be buying "Start8" for sure, to make it "look" like Windows 7.

I've used Windows 95, 98, 98SE, experienced Windows Me (oh dear), experienced Windows 2000 i think it was, i've bought Windows XP when it launched (oh dear) & then when it got through its teething problems (much better!) both Home & Pro, experienced Vista (argh!) and then i bought Windows 7.

Windows 7 is certainly the best & 'cleanest' (poor description i know, sorry) Windows i've ever used.

So which do you prefer & why do you prefer it? Aimed at those who've used Windows 8 for more than 5 minutes really.

I prefer Windows 8, admittedly I wasn't fussed about it initially but after spending some time with it I'm now progressively upgrading my Windows 7 machines. As Windows 8 has the desktop mode and a start menu replacement can be installed, Windows 7 doesn't really have anything over Windows 8 and I prefer the latter for improved performance and the number of small tweaks all over the place such as the new power user menu in place of the start menu, the much improved task manager, better support for ultra high resolution screens and the new file transfer dialogue. It also natively supports newer hardware better than Windows 7 which makes for smoother installs.

As for the start screen, I initially ignored it on non-touch machines as I agree with you it feels like it's for a phone screen and same with the touch applications. However with the touch tiles removed I'm finding it handy for one click access to my software, previously I would have to set up a desktop shortcut or browse through the start menu but now I just press the start button and have all my programs there ready to go in one click. It's also easy to group them so the image/video applications are together, utilities are near each other etc.

  • Windows 8 has its place but I agree that W7 is the best version of windows to date (for non-touchscreen hardware).

But my programming days are long behind me; I'm speaking now purely as an end user who wishes they hadn't dropped support for W2K.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

I think people who have spent considerable time using Windows XP and more direct derivatives, find it difficult to move to 8. But for newbies, 8 seems to make a bit more sense. They don't look for the Start button to shut it down, or anything else the older hands have got used to.
Personally, I'll stick to 7 for now, although do have the 8 preview loaded on a spare machine so that if someone asks a question about it, I have something to look at.

I've used Windows extensively since the DOS days and haven't had difficulty moving to 8, there have always been changes along the way so it's just a case of getting used to them. 8 is one of the more significant changes but none of it is difficult to use and most of the old shortcuts still work fine. (Alt+F4 will shut it down)
