Travel Insurance fit for purpose??

Options
Hi All

I'm off on a trip to Kenya in a few days and have been pulling my hair out over travel insurance. Initially it was trying to find an annual family policy that would cover a good range of water sports (we are qualified divers and are having a water sports holiday with the kids later in the year). However, after finally finding a policy that would cover our diving qualifications and at least the majority of the watersports for our 2nd holiday, we found it had an article limit of £100 with total of £250. This was after saying personal baggage cover was £1500! All the policies seem to be the same! Considering we'll be taking 3 cameras (1 underwater and a long range lens), 2 pairs of binoculars and 2 iphones to Kenya, we could do with insurance that would actually cover these!

Does anyone know of a policy that would actually cover all of this? Or a decent gadget policy or something that we could get additionally? If insurance policies only cover a maximum of £250, why do they say cover is £1500??!

Thanks

Does your home insurance cover personal possessions worldwide, or can it be extended?

Add your valuables onto your house insurance (for cover away from home).

Your travel insurance is the norm in not having cover for the high value items you mention.

Most home insurance policies offer an option to cover these sorts of items away from home . It sometimes called personal posessions / belongings cover. Check your policy to see if you have this already.

As you have more than a few items to be covered it would probably be cheaper to have the general personal belongings cover rather than adding each item specifically as long as they are within the policy limits - usually £1k - £2k as standard but your policy may differ. There is usually also a collective limit for claims - again you need to check the policy schedule / book.

If you don't already have this on your home insurance, the cost to add it will vary according to your personal / property details. But bear in mind it will cover your items for loss or damage in the UK also.

If you don't have the cover or need to upgrade it, give your home insurer a call and ask how much to add this - also check the excess fee!

Thanks everyone. I've checked my Morethan home insurance policy and I think I can add Contents Away from Home with 60 days worldwide cover for £32, which seems to be cheaper than gadget insurance.

I will phone them tomorrow and get it added on - thanks for the help
