Southern Electric Supply whole area

Just had a knock on my door this evening from a southern electric representative telling me that they supplied the gas and electricity for my area and even though I pay someone else for my supply (EDF) they will get the energy from them and therefore it would always be cheaper to come direct to them. I not prepared to switch at the door but is this normally the case I have been using the uswitch etc sites for find cheapest but i'm now more confused that ever! Can anyone explain how this works or was this just a marketing ploy to try and get me to switch?

    Marketing Ploy!

    In fact the Company that served the old geographic area(before de-regulation) for electricity is normally the most expensive - well was!

    All Electricity is on the National Grid(and could come from France)

    It is exactly the same gas regardless who you pay for it.

    All that matters is the price and service.

    It is `clever` and misleading script writing by the powers that be at SSE.

    The gas supply company that used to supply the majority of customers used to be known as Transco.

    That has now changed to Scotia Gas Networks.

    Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) is the holding company of Scotland Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks, SGN Connections, SGN Contracting and SGN Metering.

    Owned by a consortium made up of Scottish and Southern Energy plc (50%), Borealis Infrastructure Management Inc (25%) and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (25%), SGN operates two of the largest of the eight regional gas distribution networks across Britain. With operational regions covering over 50% of the landmass, SGN's primary focus is the delivery of natural gas to 5.6 million customers safely, reliably and efficiently.

    Gas is distributed:

    *
    to domestic, commercial and industrial customers via approximately 73,000 kilometres of gas mains;
    *
    in all of Scotland, to 75% of households, including remote areas through the Scottish Independent Undertakings (SIU) at Stornoway, Wick, Thurso, Oban and Campbeltown;
    *
    in the south, across an area reaching from Milton Keynes to Dover in the east and Lyme Regis in the west, including London boroughs to the south of the River Thames.
