The key on the computer is for the Windows operating system, not Word.

If it doesn't work and you haven't reset the computer to factory settings at any point then you only had a trial version of Word and need to buy a key from Microsoft.

    Free options include Openoffice

As above, the copy of Microsoft Office supplied with your laptop would be a time- or use- limited trial, after which you need to purchase a licence key (this is NOT the code on the bottom of the laptop, which is for the operating system)

I'd suggest uninstalling Microsoft Office via Control Panel > Programs and Features, then install one of the free open source alternatives which open, read and save in MS Office formats. Personally I use Libre Office, but others are available.

because it's asking for a number, putting the windows serial number in isn't going to make office work

The key number attached to the bottom of the laptop is most probably for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Virtually all pre-installed versions of Microsoft Office (which includes Word, Excel etc) are either time limited (30/60 day) or work a limited number of times before they cease working until a licence key is purchased and entered.

  • You can use a limited (though perfectly capable for most users) version of Word online at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/
