Temporary car insurance

Options
Hi all

Looking for some advice on cheaper car insurance...aren't we all. In this case its temporary insurance I'm after.

My son has changed his car, and now his old one is on my driveway, with MOT and tax but without insurance. I'm transferring ownership to myself and plan to insure it on a temporary basis in my name till it can be sold. I've done some online temporary insurance quotes; they're all in the region of 170 quid for just 28 days, and given that the car is only worth around £1300 it hardly seems logical to pay out that kind of money, particularly as it might take a couple of months to sell it.

What other options, if any, do I have to obtain temporary insurance at a more reasonable price till the car is sold? I have a car of my own, but my insurance company still want almost 200 quid for me to take out a month's insurance on my son's car.

Thanks.

Short term insurance is high risk so priced to match.

Why add an other keeper? Sell as is?

The Days were you sell you "old" car are over.
You need to sell it whilst it is still in use, taxed, insured and MOT.
    Then look for another.
a week or fortnights car hire is cheaper than temporary insurance.
In the meantime dont forget, no insurance means the car MUST be sorn now or a DVLA penalty will be issued to the registered keeper.
E-Bay is a good way of parting with old cars quickly. just make sure you get the paperwork correct and issue two sales receipts signed by both with GMT, day, month year of sale on, keep one, give one to the new buyer.
Dont let them drive the car on a road until you have the money and the signed receipt and the money.
This includes drafts and cheques, cash them first.
    Be happy...;)
  • Thanks, all. I wasn't aware that even if a car has valid road tax, you have to SORN if it's off the road and without insurance; I was under the impression that the SORN only applied if there was no tax. Just looked at the V5C and confirmed that yes, this is in fact the case. I guess I'll have to persuade my son to put it on a multi car insurance policy with his current provider till we can sell it. Just gone part way through the online SORN declaration and the SORN would activate from the beginning of the month, resulting in a refund of tax. We don't want that because that then means retaxing it once it goes up for sale. Guess whichever way we do this, it will still be cheaper than insuring it month my month till sold.

    Thanks again.

If you ask nicely, many insurers will still give you, say a 14 day overlap whilst you sell the old one.

    clue in bold above ;)

    And again, thank you.
I'm currently insured with LV on my own car, so I agreed with my son that we would change keeper/ ownership, rang LV and insured the car in my name on a basic fully comp policy. It's not one of those "multi car" thingies but they have matched my full no claims on the other car so its just £266 for the year, paid monthly. When we sell the vehicle I'll have to pay a policy cancellation fee of 40 quid, but that'll come out of the proceeds of sale. I think that's a lot better than paying the £1200 quid up front that my son's insurance company wanted to charge him for insuring it on one of their much touted "multicar" policies, then going through the hassle of claiming a refund once the car is sold.
