Talk of raising the cap on care home fees

Seems very unfair that those you have worked hard built up a nest egg should have to sell up to cover costs while those you have ran up debt, not put anything buy get a free ride

isnt this the new way though - try to look after yourself and you'll get penalised.

It's the socialist state: they want to do all the caring for you as you can't be trusted to do it for yourself. Assets can and should be seized and for the greater good.

I see nothing wrong with this policy though; you save for a rainy day and there ain't gonna be a rainer one than you going into a home. You can be pretty sure that you're only going to be leaving there feet first!

If I end up in a care home I fully intend to be paying for it myself. No way I want to spend my last years in some grotty place funded by the government; I'll be in the most expensive one I can afford.

If this trend continues, won't people try to hide their assets - possibly abroad, or 'sell' their houses to their children etc??
  • On a personal note when the time comes and I can no longer look after myself I'd rather be put peacefully to sleep - I have no intentions of ever going into a home - I suspect the law will change over next few decades so that we can talk openly about death and give me a exit plan

I think the Governement should look back to times gone by, give tax relief/incentives for families to live together - encourage in-house care by relatives rather than strangers from abroad.......

They already do. They try every trick in the book.

A good friend works in this area, and is responsible for assessing assets and care needs for people in the Manchester area.

He gets threats of violence on a regular basis; as though he were personally pocketing the money! As you might imagine, sickness and stress levels in his department are pretty high.

It's just part of a wider culture where we expect someone else to pay. That culture exists at all levels.

Can you be sure that paying more will get you the best possible care, or will you just be lining the pockets of the business who run it? There are horror stories in both the private sector
