Bought watch, got empty box

If its the sisters boyfriend buying it as a present for the sister I don't see why they would get him to try it on!
The point I was trying to make was that they have always shown me what I was buying and they would ensure that it was in working order.
I may be fortunate that I live in a area that has good customer care and the OP's friend may not be so lucky.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0 -
Does Argos have CCTV and did he buy it within 30 days (most places don't routinely keep CCTV longer due to Data Protection Act, I think)? It may help his case if CCTV shows him being given it without it being opened.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

That's exactly what i was thinking!
Really hope this is the case and it's still there rather than it being a thieving employee!0 -

yes it was within the last 30 days, knowing him he probably bought it on christmas eve.
He definitely ordered it at the normal tills and collected it from the collection point0 -
All the Argos shops I use have a jewellery section and the staff member opens the box in front of me so I can try it on. I have never had to go to the collection point to pick up a item of jewellery.
My local Argos has a jewellery counter but it is never staffed, everything goes through the main collection point. Plus all customer service is done at the tills, there is no one at the CS point either. Not a service issue, just a very quiet store!I_luv_cats wrote: »Does the shop have a watch display cabinet? This is my thought too - if not OP is pretty much screwed.0 -

If he ordered it at the normal till, then I imagine the watch is probably still on the display if it was the last in stock.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I was replying to a post that asked if a watch could be classed as a jewellery item
That wasn't exactly what I was asking, and you know it.
Unless things have changed from what I remember, at Argos jewellery is sold from a separate counter. If the OP's sister's boyfriend collected it from a normal counter then that would suggest it was NOT classed as an item of jewellery, hence not opened at the counter. (Normal goods are not normally opened at the counter unless requested by the purchaser).0 -
Having worked at this store, it may be hard, customer service is not their middle name.
As the Op suggests it's quite normal for jewellery items to be collected at collection points. If you order at the tills or self service then this is the normal process.
I would point out that not all staff have access to the jewellery store and the colleagues working on collection points would have to ask the person working the counter, or the manager sitting in the expensive item office for the relevant box. Maybe that's why it wasn't checked.
I think (as many have said) it's probably in the watch display cabinet.
Let us know how you get on! Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for your responses. We went back this morning, asked to speak to a manager. We explained to her what happened, gave her the receipt and she asked us to give her a few minutes to go look into it. She came back, and said the stock was up by 1 so they could confirm he had definitely been sold an empty box. She said the display ones usually have a band around them and that maybe the band had fell off or been taken off in error. She apologized and got us the watch.
Sister is very happy, she got what she wanted, and at the end of the day, the manager sorted it out very professionally so we were really happy with the outcome. Human error does happen, its the way they sorted it that counts. Thanks so much for everyone's help, i really appreciate it.0
