files backed up- what type?

nero burning is playing up and i cant burn files to disc, however , i can back up files to disc ,i did this and when i tried to open the avi file it gave "windows cannot open file" as it was in some weird file type- surely it should be backed up as it originally was in avi format?(which it did when nero worked fine)- anyway i tried the disc in divx player and it worked fine,my prob is that will the back up files convert easily onto a dvd in divx format or will i have to endure complex jiggery pokery encoding techno nonsense?
btw-have tried uninstall/reinstall nero - but same probs

Why don't you try another burning app? There are a few shareware/free apps around I think.
