It is pretty easy. I guess these are replacement doors - rather than new?

Before cutting doors scribe the veneer with a stanley knife to reduce likelihood of chipping at the edge.
Take the measurement off the old doors and cut to size.
Use an electric plane to smooth the cut edge. Smooth the edge of the veneer with a file / sandpaper for a neat finish.
Take measurement to locate door funiture in same place.
Use a wedge / screw driver or (at a push) get your wife to hold the door up whilst you screw it into place.

A tip for using wedges especially if you are doing it single handed ,use two long taper ones, one from each side,on top of each other and at the centre of balance this way the door is more stable cos it won't slide off as can with single wedge Oh , and a screwdriver used under the door can damage the veneer ,stiletto on foot and all that:D

The best tip I have heard for hanging doors is to put a hammer on the floor and a chisel across the hammer so the end is under the door and then you can put your foot on the other end and hold the door excatly where you want it

Take a look at this to get a feel for the job and see if you are up for it.

I know loads of users will find faults but I think it is good enough to get ya by.
  • Hi Luke,

I've got somebody here at the minute whose replacing our internal doors, and although I see that the steps are well-defined in these posts, I have to say that I think that hanging doors is anything but straightforward. I appreciate that many of you are very handy with jobs like this, and my OH and I generally do all and any jobs around the house (except papering ceilings), but this was just one step too far for us.

I don't think we have two doors the exact same size, one of the frames is off, and the locks need to be moved. The new doors need new hinges to be fitted which are bigger than the previous ones.

After spending £1500 for the doors and furniture, I'm glad we didn't try and take on this operation. We're paying £30-£40 per door and for us, that's definitely worth it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Obviously, it depends on your level of competence at carpentry but I appreciate thats not a very helpful answer...

I agree with well-medicated and am tempted to suggest that if you have to ask, get a pro in. Having seen various DIY bodges, I think its a very fiddly job to get right unless you are a competent wood-worker.

We got a chippy to do ours for £30 each. it was money well spent for us.
