    There's a colliery museum near us where you can have a go at making them. I always thought that hooky/proggy mats were mainly a North East coal mining thing but I guess many poor industrialised areas would have made them:)

    I went to the t extra at about 5 & got meat :D

    Correct. DW has been making them and going to charity shops to buy cheap (but good quality) material to cut up into strips. Problem is finding the heavy duty hessian/sacking for the backing.
