skirting

can anyone suggest a good way of attaching skirting to crooked walls - I live in an old stone cottage whose walls are postively wavy in places, and so glue won't hold, battens are impossible, and nails look horrible (and are difficult to get into solid stone)

Have you tried different glue, I got some mastik glue from local iron mongers for £3 and it sticks almost anything, in minutes in some cases, although best use something to hold it in or 24 hours on safe side

/runs off to garage to check, its called Gripfill in a green mastick container, We used this before on sticking rigid board to wood and also we used it for daydoo rails or whatever it is and gluing MDF shelving.

On thing it doesn't seem to stick is rubber to iron that I found out today (making some rubber feet for a garden bench to stop scratching some wood where it sits)

Not all mastick glue is the same, I tried all sorts including no nails this is far better

gripfill sounds promising! - will certainly try it
  • Grab adhesive is good, but you may need mechanical fixings if they are really bad. Here is how to cut them etc-

    Do the job right.........
Drill the skirting board on the inside of 'the wavy bit'.
Get a masonary drill mark thro the skirting onto the stone take skirting away from wall drill / wall plug wall / countersink hole in skirting so screw head does not show when screwed in.
Put screws part way thro skirting put back to wall and screw up tight.
Fill holes in skirting and paint
Job done and done right........dont mess about with glue !!!!

If its an old house with stone walls then good luck drilling into stone with any masonary bits or power drill.
Been there, tried that, arms came off (well you know what i mean)
You might be lucky and get the holes into the mortar between the stones themselves but if its old then the chances of them holding under any sort of strain (from bends in the skirting) are slim i would say!
I would glue them on as best you can and go along the edges and fill any obvious gaps between the skirting and the wall and then paint over in an attempt to disguise.

How about dropping the idea of skirting and get the plaster right down to floor level? I guess that's what they would have done in the 17th century, so you would be restoring an original feature to boot!

can't now do without skirting as I have laminate flooring, and trying to edge it would be just as difficult, I suspect - I think I will have to nail skirting on where gaps are widest and place my furniture over the worst bits!

i would use no nails glue and screws/plugs.
maybe also be an idea to cut some slits on the rear face of the skirting to allow some give.
    Get some gorm.
