I need 4 digit code (HSBC online banking)

I have a credit card with Tesco Bank and the account number has changed so im trying to set up a new online payee through my HSBC account. I have to use one of those digit generators but I get to the part where it says 'enter last four digits of bill or organistation number'

I do not know these numbers ive tried putting in the last 4 digits of the cc, the first 4 but no luck. Ive called Tesco Bank but they are useless and couldn't get an answer.

Can anyone help

If you've paid through HSBC internet banking before, and you chose the details through their list of payees, the account number should have updated automatically to the new details. Check it.

  • Try last 4 digits of account number (if similar to barclays)

I'm not surprised! The 'problem' is with HSBC, if you're still stuck on step 2 after entering the last 4 digits of your credit card number?...

    Generate a transaction code

We take the issue of security very seriously. As this is the first time you've made this payment online, you need to create a transaction code to authorise this payment.

1 - Hold down the pckshot_btn_1.gif button to turn on your secure key, then enter your secure key pin.

2 - Press the pckshot_btn_2.gif button and a dash will appear on the screen. Enter the last 4 digits of the bill or organisation reference number.

3 - Press the pckshot_btn_2.gif button again and a 6 digit code will appear.
Input the 6 digit code below.

EDIT: You are selecting "pay a bill or organisation" aren't you (and not "pay family, friends and other accounts")?

Yes thats right even in the drop down list of payees on mastercard there is no 4 digit number

You need to input the last 4 digits of the reference number ... which should be the last 4 digits of the long credit card number on your tesco card.

If it doesn't work, check you inputted the correct number as a reference number in the first place. (no spaces)

When you add a new payee or amend the significant details on an existing payee you need to use your secure log on token to get a number to authorise it. It's the 2 stage authentication process used to prevent fraud. (BTW I'm HSBC staff)

Have you checked that the sort code and account number on the tesco letter has not been automatically updated by HSBC. I have a HSBC a/c and tesco card, see tesco letter says it might have been updated mine had so i dont need to take any action when i am ready to make my next payment.

My letter only contains new account details, number and sort code. there is nothing to suggest anything has automatically been updated.

You have to read the instructions on the HSBC site carefully.

In a recent transaction I set up it asked for the last four digits of the Account Number you intend to credit (not the reference number)

    That's presumably 6044 for you :)

You bung that into the HSBC magic box and get the 6 digit number it generates and input that into the webpage.
  • I've just been struggling with this and found what worked for me that no-one here has yet explained.

The issue lies in the Reference number that is being used for the payment. When it says "what's the reference for the bill or organisation you want to pay" type your whole 16 digit credit card number here.

Then, when it asks to use your calculator to type the last 4 digits of the ref number in, use the last 4 digits of the credit card number.
