private reg and insurance
my son is 17 and has just bought his new car (53 plate), he is planning on insuring it today so that he can use it to practice in addition to his lessons
His nanna and auntie (my side of the family) have clubbed together to buy him a private reg for Christmas that he as yet knows nothing about
The car is in the garage and in my name as at the time he bought it he wasnt 17, it will be completed and transferred as soon as it is insured and out on the road/driveway.
My question is, when doing car insurance do you put in the real reg or the private reg? If private reg then we cant insure it until tomorrow or Boxing Day
i have never had a private reg, am assuming you insure the private reg but havent got a clue
thanks

You must insure using the reg that is legal, even if only for a few days.The private one won't be legal till the transfer is carried out.This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

It needs to be insured in the reg that will be on the car. Otherwise the computer database won't be right. You also need to get a new tax disc showing the correct reg.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. so in that case would I be best not putting on the private reg on his car until the tax disc expires in 3 months? or do you just get a replacement disc?
I will be left paying for this as they have bought the plates, do i have to pay to register the plates on the car?
thanks, knew this was going to be a hassle but they wouldnt listen0 -

You won't be able to transfer the reg the until you have done the paperwork. When you have, they will send you a new tax disc, you then ring your insurers to notify them of the change of reg. When you have done all that, you can put the plates on the car and drive it on public roads.
If you bought the reg from the DVLA, the procedure should be outlined in the bumph they send you with the certificate of entitlement. If the plate wasn't bought direct from the DVLA, you probably will have to pay the £80 transfer fee.0 -
You also need to advise the insurance company that you wish to retain ownership of the plate otherwise if the car is written off they get to keep the plate.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

New MOT certificate will be required displaying the new private reg. I go to the local DVLA office to transfer plates there and they print you a new one, along with a new tax disc.0

fgs wait til he passes before putting a private reg on.0

And I think the person who buys 'the right to display that registration' and the car owner have to be the same. My husband bought me a plate and had to buy it in his name as the car is registered in his name too.
Oh and if the car is ever in doubt of being written off get the number transferred onto a retention certificate BEFORE it is confirmed as a write off. I nearly lost mine because the DVLA processed them the wrong way round!Mortgage, paid off!0
