I want White / Lilac Hair!

Hi all! I was just wondering if there were any hairdressers on here that could give me some advice?

My hair is currently a Dark Brown / Deep Red colour which I've dyed the same colour for the last 10 years. It's time for a change, and as a natural dirty blonde, I'm hoping to go for something lighter...

I'm dying to turn my Dark Brown / Deep Red hair into this..

I understand that there will need to be some stripping, bleaching and what not. My hairs in fantastic condition and bleaching it to an inch of it's life isn't really a worry of mine. If needed I would chop it all of to start again... But hopefully that won't happen!

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this? I know about Toners, Bleaches etc etc, but in what order and really how much should I space them out between different things (a week between bleaches? A month?)

P.S I know this is bad for my hair, and it won't be in any decent condition afterwards, but I've got the itch... It's happening! Help me not go too bald! :D

  • Don't do it yourself. Go to a hairdresser.

And remember it'll cost you a fortune in upkeep!

(ooooo and post pics when you do it - I haven't got the face or figure for a hairstyle like that and will be jealous when it looks awesome on you ;) )

  • If you have a yellow base then the lilac will tone your hair, but not always dye it, so start as light as possible.

Thanks for the reply! I do intend on getting the first stripping and bleaching done at a hair dressers, its just the spaces in between the different treatments that I'm a bit worried about!

I have a friend who had lighter hair than me originally and has achieved a similar look - Upkeep is surprisingly cheap!!

Go for a bleach every 6-8 weeks to keep the roots looking good. Tone it to silver / white. Then 2 parts Manic Panic semi-perm dye in 4 parts of hair conditioner, and shes got this but with more of a pink tinge to it rather than lilac (that was her intention :rotfl:)

I'm just conscious that the red in my hair is not going to want to let go easily!
  • I had deep purple hair (think Cadbury's, lol) that faded/washed out to that kind of colour. I felt it looked grey. If your older than 21 I'd say be very careful!
  • I had my hair white-white a couple of years ago and people absolutely loved it! Problem was because I'm in my 40's, I felt like I had to explain that it was white-blond not white-grey!

I never attempted it myself even after months of having it - I always went to the hairdressers. I would suggest that you get silver shampoo which is deep purple in colour. This will keep it looking shiny and white - not brassy. You'll notice the difference if you stop using it for a few days - you go a bit yellow. BUT.... don't use it straight and certainly not every day - it'll go silver. My hairdresser suggested mixing it with my usual colour saver shampoo.

ETA: My hair was in great nick afterwards. As long as you condition it every time you wash it and treat it well it won't ruin your hair!
  • I hear you on red - seems like it's hard to keep a nice bright red but even harder to get rid of the last vestiges of it!

Let me know if you manage :) in case I decide to have a change!

  • Mine is that colour but afte a few washes the lilac tone washes out but the silver/white tone stays in (yes the roots come in tho!)
If you do do it try and get a hairdresser that has wella lumina (colouring technique it's new) and buy wella sp blonde shampoo beautybay is the cheapest - you can put this on dry and leave for a few mins to boost the colour
  • Thanks for the fab advice!!! I'm half and half between doing it myself and getting a hairdresser to do it! What do you guys suggest? X
  • Hairdresser!
  • All I can add is once your hair is blond if you use the purple shampoo and conditioner (Lee Stafford do a good one) then your hair will have a purple tone the more you use it.
