Pension tax relief

hi guys,

have just realised i have not been claiming tax relief on my personal pension contributions. Anyone know how many years back i can claim?? Also, anyone know how long it takes for HMRC to get back to you?? Im going to pester them stupid as i dont get anything off this !!!!! government, even when we are struggling. I figure, why should they keep my pension tax relief too?? Also, i pay for some of my uniform and my hubby too, have to launder our uniforms every week and have to buy our own shoes as they dont provide us with any!! Also pay into professional bodies and unions. Can we claim tax back on all or any of these and do i just write to HMRC?

Thank you! XXX

You dont pay tax on your pension contributions, they are made before your pay is taxed

Personal pensions almost invariably claim back basic rate tax relief themselves. Check your statements. If you are a higher rate taxpayer you can claim additional tax relief, or if you claim tax credits you can reduce the income you declare by the amount of your (gross) contributions. But if you're a basic rate taxpayer (and under 65) you won't get any additional tax relief.

The other stuff - uniforms etc, ask your employer, they should have agreed an amount with HMRC. Unions etc, sometimes you can get tax relief, usually not, ask them, they'll tell you.
