classic christmas pain

Hi

Bought the kids two brand new netbooks from Argos on eBay. Opened one when they arrived, took a while to configure, but all in, not too bad. Just opened second one, booted straight up, and is a used net book, complete with legacy user detail, non standard software, and existing config

So, Argos don't have any more, but I'm not pleased I've got a second hand unit.

Any practical advice? I've changed user names to my daughters so she won't notice, but under task manager it's still the old users name, plus I didn't contract to pay the new price for a used, and by the look of the log files, very old machine...

I've raised a query with Argos via eBay, and will. Call if I can tomorrow.

Cheers

Mark

What solution do you want? If you wish to remove the old user details, ask on the Techie board. If you wish to get a refund, don't start messing about with it - wait until Argos get back to you.

It will always be a potential problem buying from Argos ebay site as it is their returns they are flogging.

I think it's going to have to be a solution in between. If they can't replace it, otherwise one child has more than the other and that's not going to go down well.

Was described as brand new, not even a caveat about being returned stock. Honest mistake probably just a pain in this instance.

If they have no more available there's not really much you can do other than get a refund tbh.

    Or try a factory restore

definitely take proof and then factory restore, at least that would give you a usable present come Christmas day...
  • Well theres two issues here

If Argos are selling pre owned systems which contain previous user data Inform the ICO (Information Commissioners Office) and Argos can be fined for each infringement.

Secondly if you want to keep the item (keeping in mind it is a used system and any data that was on there can be recovered (E.g illegal pictures of kids) and the police confiscate it, you could be prosecuted, you should be fine as it should be possible to tell when the pictures were uploaded (no guarantees), but the press are awfully keen on these things so your name may be tarnished before you're cleared.

You do have the right to return it. You dont necessarily have a right to anything else.

However, that doesnt mean that (if you decide to keep it) you cant haggle with them on the price. After all, its going to cost them money to recover it from you/for the initial postage if you return it. So asking for a partial refund wouldnt be unreasonable in the slightest imo.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Why would ICO be fined! ? Surely they do the fining?
    Just asking

Why not give either child a computer, then sort it out after Christmas? Just wrap up a picture of a computer.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
