Do you decant cheap versions into branded packaging?

  • I don't. I don't want my kids thinking there is something wrong with non-branded foodstuffs, and neither myself nor husband are stupid enough to care about the box food comes in.

  • Loosely related - I had the MIL over today.

She told a story where she was on holiday with some friends and someone had order a "branded" spirit & coke. The drinks were brought over and "Mr clever" took a sip and rejected it saying it wasn't the right thing. The server looked at the MIL as she had eye contact with a "what a !!!!!!" type face on. The barmen took the drink back, "fumbled" with some optics for a few moments, and bought it back. "That's better", came the reply .... and the server winked knowingly at the MIL who then smiled.

I have done, as otherwise Mr S will declare he doesn't like this brand. I did it with brown sauce once decanting it into the HP bottle we'd used up. He ate it till the day I admitted what I'd done then all of a sudden he hadn't liked it for months and thought the recipe had changed. Never explained why he'd never mentioned this before my confession!

No, I haven't got the time and energy for all that malarky. If you don't like it buy your own or do without.

My freind used to take all the labels off her tins though and mark what was in them with magic marker.
Her kids would chuck out anything not branded, personally I would have thrown out the kids.

Yeah, totally mental... they were not children, teenagers, something to do with a certain brand of baked beans and tomato soup if you get me? Still trying to figure it out myself.

    Nope.

The only time I ever decant anything is if the original container is awkward to use and I can decant it into something I'm less likely to spill or get into difficulties with.
With my ex, I would decant Basics ketchup into a Heinz squeezy bottle, unwrap butter, take cornflakes out of the box, that kind of thing - because he would throw anything away that looked like 'someone poor bought them'.
Was this a contributory factor in his becoming an Ex?;)

I am trying to work out why on earth anyone would let their kids do it, mine would only ever have done it once if they wanted to get fed in the future.

Me too, but some mothers are not like us.
  • I wouldn't do it, but that's because I need the labels. I have allergies and food intolerances, my husband is allergic to a couple of things, and a friend that visits frequently has allergies too. I hate eating out because I can't taste the difference between certain brands, but if a restaurant serves me the wrong drink, my body will react pretty quickly.
