Signing mortgage offer before survey is completed

No, the form is called a mortgage offer document. I am supposed to sign and return it with for my bank details for the direct debit payments.
I am bit confused too, friends have said their's were valid for six months but this is definitely only valid til 3rd jan and according on the person on the phone can't be extended even though I haven't had the survey.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or is there something else I might have misunderstood?0 -

If this is correct I can't see how HSBC would ever lend on any mortgages. It's rare for a house to complete within four weeks!0
