USA customs charge question

Hello, since you lovely lot helped me work out how I actually send stuff to America I need to know how much I can send before the poor people on the other end get stung for customs charges! I've tried looking it up, but I got completely lost (again!)
How much is the limit, cost wise that I can send over? I'll be selling in £'s
Is it per item? Or is it in total?
If the latter and the total amount comes to more than they're allowed can I send them in a couple (or more) packages?
Thanks for your help :-)

Basically packages whose declared value is under US$200 will generally be cleared without tax or duty if you fill in a CN22 customs declaration. A bill or invoice should be enclosed within too.
You can split larger value shipments into several below the $200 threshold, but don't send them all at the same time as they will likely be flagged for closer inspection.
See the US Customs website for details."Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."0
