Back-dating gift aid and tax credits

I know that I can backdate giving gift aid up to 6 years. The question is, how does this work with tax credits? I imagine that HMRC won't want me to decrease previous years' income, but if not, can I use it all against this year's that I'm currently claiming for?

The HMRC guidance would imply it is not as simple as that.

Regardless of the tax position, for tax credits you could appeal last year's claim if you are still in the time limit (max 13 months from award notice - but you need a good reason why you didn't appeal with the normal 30 day time limit).
Otherwise, you could deduct it from your current year income.
You need to google form TC825 which explains more.
