Some advice needed
Hi,
I need some advice on what I should do next.
I went to the gym today and parked in a massive (local council) car park. It was virtually empty. After my gym session I went back to the car and attached was a plastic wallet with something inside - junk I thought.
However, there was an apology note as someone had hit my bumper and from the damage it appears they were prob driving a 4x4 or MPV. The damage is really bad more than just a scratch. I reckon the bumper will need replacing!
Anyway this person went to the effort of putting an apology note on my windscreen, so it wouldn't get wet and asked me to call them. However, upon trying the no goes straight to voicemail (surprise, surprise). I've left a voicemail/message for this person to call back and discuss how to sort the damage out. If the number is duff can I report this to the police?
There is a crown court a few metres away with one of those round security cameras as well as a hotel, which I believe also has cameras.
If I report it to the police are they obliged to help me or will they simply say its a civil matter or cant do anything as I didnt get the guys details?
Would the onus fall on me to see if the court service provide cctv footage or will the police do it? Also if i explained the circumstances can the court service refuse or would they co-operate?
I will obv have to wait till Monday (that if they are opened) to find out about any cctv footage, but should I report it to the police?
Had the damage been minor I wouldnt have bothered, but the scratch/dent is big and as my cars only worth about £1000 could quite easily be a write off. Do i need to inform my insurance just yet? I was hoping to go thru this person's if they ever pick the phone up.
Never been in this situation before, so any advice would be much appreciated.
Regards

You should inform your insurance ASAP. If you intend on persuing it.
