Horrible dog owners.

Why are some dog owners so odd? I had a guy today who literally picked his Labrador up when he saw my two dogs (also Labradors) walking towards him! The other day a woman turned around when she saw me coming towards her with my dogs (I'm a 17yr old girl so don't look threatening or anything lmao) and the other day a man told me to keep my dogs away from his else his dog would take my dogs noses off?! It's just weird.

  • You might not look threatening but your dogs might to a stranger who doesn't know them. You don't know what bad experiences these people have had with other dogs and their stupid owners.

One of my dogs holds a grudge against Westies because we think he was attacked by one before we had him. Your Westies might be the loveliest dogs on the planet but I'm going to have to cross the street if I see you coming. It's nothing personal.

  • You've never owned a dog with issues obviously - or a dog that's been attacked by other dogs on more than one occasion... I turn and walk away from lots of dogs unless I know them - one of my dogs has been attacked twice by a certain breed of dog so I try to avoid situations where it'll become a third type... I also often tend to steer clear of lab/spaniel owners during the summer months as we do have a high proportion of fair weather dog walking idiots locally who own these breeds (bought on the perception they're "easy to train" and the assumption this means they get a perfect dog that only requires walking on sunny days and doing what it's told out of the box so to speak).

And yes a man who asked you to keep your dogs away as his had issues - would you rather he didn't warn you and let yours come bowling up and get hurt? That's not rude - that's preventing an incident... one of my dogs has some issues with social interaction - she's walked on a lead full-time as a result - but people persist in letting their dogs go bowling up to her, humping her, hassling her, winding her up and generally undoing all the work we've done on her trying to learn to greet other dogs calmly and not gob off at them (she's got naff all teeth so it's just gobbing off and telling them to get stuffed) - and it's such an ongoing annoyance and problem that people DO get very cross at it and the rude behaviour is considered to be letting an off-lead dog hassle one that's on-lead... not asking for dogs not to be allowed to greet as one side doesn't want it to happen.

That doesn't sound weird to me.
It just sounds like he didn't trust his dog not to snap at yours and he was just advising you not to let them get too close.

I presume your dogs weren't wearing comedy noses, which might explain the statement?

My dog will try to bite another dog who approaches him too closely so I keep him on a short lead around other dogs and I tell the other owner that he's not friendly so they know the reason why.

I wouldn't use language that might sound threatening like the chap you met, but owners who allow their dogs to rush up excitedly to other dogs are a bit selfish IMO - they don't seem to care that other dogs might have problems or issues.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.
  • Dogs are like people, you are always going to get some that just do not like each other.
However I agree and can understand fully the point the op is making.

If you do not trust your dog to the point you feel it would bite/attack another dog or person, you need to muzzle it and find somewhere to walk it away from other dogs and people.

I have owned dogs all my life and am never surprised by the utter stupid things people say to me when I am out walking with my dog.
I think I have heard it all in my time, and then some guy is heading straight to me being pulled along by two huge snarling mastiffs.
He says "keep your dog away from mine mate or they will kill it".
I reply "You headed towards me, and why are you walking two dangerous dogs in a public place?" He then says "Oh they aint dangerous mate, they just dont like other dogs" lmao.

Some people need to learn how to train their pooch, or at least have the first idea what is required of them before they own a dog.

If people used a bit of common sense we could all relax a bit more and enjoy our walks.

If you have a dog that is likely to bite others then there is some responsibility on your part to have your dog muzzled when out in public.

Not doing so puts you in the Op's group of horrible dog owners. :)
  • Because of the size of my dog, I like to stand aside and I prefer to give way to oncoming pedestrians. I distract the dog by telling him to look at me and and I will stroke him. It annoys me when the people dont say thank you because I stood aside for them - clearly they were dragged up!

And were your dogs on leads?
  • A border collie earlier jumped up at me and the owner was clearly finding it hard to handle him.... he did not even say sorry either. The dog was on one of those mile long leads!

I walk my dog on a short lead and he would not dare jump up on anyone... it looks bad on me otherwise!
