From your description it's a junction box. If you can post a photo, someone can confirm this.

Cooker hood ought to have a fused spur (or plug) protected by a 3/5 amp fuse.

The cooker point will usually be protected at the consumer unit by a 30amp fuse/breaker.
How do I add a signature?

OK - too complicated and safety related for me to do...will need to get someone in.

    Thanks.

Not really complicated. Isolate the circuit, test for power, replace JB with an FCU fused to the correct rating.
But certainly not to be attempted unless you know basic electrical wiring and safety.
My only query is, how many cables feeding the JB 'upstream'? If only one, it's already spurred from another point. If 2, that JB is actually acting as a JB as well, and not just as a connecting point.
But assuming the former, someone has just been very sloppy and used a JB because the couldn't be bothered to go out and get the proper component.

I read this far, and was about to say "How can you test for power when you've isolated the circuit", but then realised you're testing for absence of power ....

Well, I should have said, test for power-and if there is any, you're doing something wrong at the previous stage...
