They are also legally allowed to take alcohol from you if you are intoxicated, which it sounds like you were, so I would say they were right to have it away from you on two counts.

Pubs should be seen as more of a rental arrangement than any kind of purchase. Even in the case, the OP's beer was removed from his table because he went to return the beer he had previously purchased.
