Hardest thing ever, my dogs are still young (in fact having a play fight now) but when the time comes I will be upset .

I also wouldn't want to go through what my Dad did, due to financial problems he cancelled his dogs insurance within one month he was really ill. 6lots of surgery later they had to give up and put him to sleep because he lost control of his back end completely. 2 years later he was still paying off the £2000+ bill.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

    Shykins,

Our vet as quoted us £150 for a cremation when the time comes. They could deal with it a lot cheaper, but we will have the ashes returned, so for us it will be the right decision.

Certainly taking the dog to the vets is much cheaper than a home visit of any kind.

It was £68 at my vets. I took her in and they dealt with everything. I did not have her ashes back. They go to a local pet cemetery and are scattered on a rose garden.

We are having the ashes back ,hence the price.Everyones choice is their own.

Actually not a million miles away from where I live there is an animal and pet "woodland" where you can have your ashes and pet ashes buried together, quite a nice and envioremently friendly idea as you have your own tree planted as opposed to headstones etc

Balmaiden my heart goes out to you. I have lived with dogs for most of my life and it doesn't get any easier when their time comes. We recently lost our nineteen year old, three legged cat to kidney failure, he enjoyed life right up until the last day or two when we knew that he had had enough and I am sure that you alone will know when the time is right to say goodbye to your old girl.

thanks for the info on the prices etc and i think i would want his ashes back as well so i could plant a tree for him myself

we are still trying to come to a decision ourselves, poor boy even looks old now but as i have been ill i cant deal with losing him at the same time

everyones comments have been really helpful and much appreciated by me and no doubt the OP.. still doesnt make the decision any easier but other peopls experiences make u see if more clearly

    thanks again everyone

    An update,

Our beloved dog was put to sleep this morning at 9.30 am,at home on her blanket. Her time had come. It was quick ,easy and peaceful, but Im afraid her " mum" and "Dad" are heartbroken. Infact Dad has taken a full day of work, unheard of in this house.
