Spoke to a TNT delivery driver the other week. They reckon they are under-paid at £36k p/a and thats just for a 7.5T driver.

I'm off to apply for a job with them if that's what they really pay. Way more than the £18k I get.

Except the one i was talking to in Wolverhampton had 140 drops to do that day.

With the town centre and narrow side streets where parking a 7.5 ton lorry is a nightmare some take a lot longer than expected.

You won't find £36k at the end of the TNT rainbow.

That'll be takings, not profit. And a truck will not be cheap to buy and maintain

Based on a 50 week working year, 5 days a week... That's £144 per day. Sounds achievable for a LGV

fridgeracer, I presume there are others there that do the same job as yourself? What do they drive, and how do their costs compare to yours?

If you can I would suggest you put bare minimum on credit card or hp because if the business goes under, or they sell it, your new car does not perform, or loose favour with your service then you are left paying the debt with no income, and for me the risk is too large.

Do you claim mileage tax relief?

Personally cars at this age I'd haggle and also buy privately. I think you generally get more honest private sellers than traders. Possibly a popular Japanese model, or at a push a German one as they tend to be the most reliable. Ask for service docs and old mot. Set priorities: probably reliability is your first concern, tax, insurance and fuel will be others in the order of expense. Ask if the car is reliable and look at the service records,

I would look here and play http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/postcode/bh12bu/radius/60/onesearchad/used/fuel-type/diesel/sort/default/seller-type/private_adverts
Not knowing your business take a guess, did a search under diesel and VW polo diesel 98 for £750. Zafira 02 for £1600. Xsara picasso 2001 £750. VW passat est 1.9td £999. Belingo van 02 £1250. Audi A6 TD est 99 £1395.
UK second most reliable car vauxhall agilla and cheap parts 230 litre boot(with back seats down) 00 £649, smaller boot than c3 but you can buy 4 of these for your C3 price and still have petrol money left.

Since you are broke void anything with EGR valves or DPF. Turbos are fun, but go wrong too. Use honest john and the reliability index.

Thought about working weekends and evening doing mini cab, it may pay more and might even become your new job.

i think ive just lost the job tbh. my manager asked me yesterday if i wanted my round to be covered today so that i can clear off catalogues. i said, no - i am doing the catalogues and the round its not a problem. he says thats fine then, i`ll leave you be. come this morning my round is gone, i called him and he said he gave it to someone else today due to me needing to clear off catalogues.

as usual the fat !!!!!!! hears one thing and processes in his brain something else. we argued and i swore at him, havent been sacked as of yet but i dont think this will last any longer.

im taking your's and other people's advice here now and im selling the C3 privately for 2950. in this area the car for that mileage with full history on service and new MOT and new tax i believe will sell for that price easy since there are similar ones for 500 quid more. selling it for that will at least put me back to square 1.

meantime i am looking for a proper delivery job such as DPD or a local company that lets me use their van and the fuel is on them, i simply do the job and get a salary ( i think).

i was thinking and still am thinking of taxi driving and have been for years now, but how can i find the time being the only breadwinner in the family at the moment to actually go and do that? i think i`ll just have to wait til the missus finishes college and gets a full time job and takes over payments on the house so i can stop temporarily and go and do that. tbh though im not sure about doing it living in bournemouth. theres so many cabbies down here and im hearing its too saturated. im seeing regularly the same cabbies parked up the same times everyday not earning any money, but i could be wrong of course. maybe i could focus on airport runs for rich people who are willing to pay for a cab ride in a comforable car rather than the hassle of a train or bus.
