Why you may need to claim ESA/JSA now, if you've not been working this year.

If you have savings over 16k, or a working partner, you cannot usually claim income related ESA, or JSA.
If you have not been working in 2012, you will depend on your contributions in earlier years.
(Specifically, ni contributions as an employed earner).
This is now based on the contributions in tax years 9/10 and 10/11.
If you were working in 9/10, but not in 10/11, come the new year you may not be able to claim, though you would be eligible for contributions based if you applied now.
This is because come the new year, a claim will be asessed on contributions from 10/11 and 11/12. If you have not been working significantly as an employee in both years, you may not qualify.
