When to apply for JSA

Do you have to wait until you've finished with your employment before you can apply for JSA?
I am finishing up today, but will be on garden leave for the duration of my notice period.
Also I have been given the option of either resigning or the company will write to me terminating my contract in the new year and I'm not sure what will happen if I choose to resign.
Any help and advice would be appreciated

You claim on the first working day that you are unemployed. If you resign your JSA can be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks.0
-
If you do not apply soon, your claim will be based on contributions during 11/12, not 9/10 (in addition to 10/11 in both cases).
This can be important for some, who will not be able to claim contribution based benefits as they have not been working (enough) paying employed NI in 11/12.0 -
I am halfway through my probation period, does the sanction threat still apply if both the company and I have agreed that it's not working? Sorry to sound dim, but I have no experience of this at allFeb 2024:

Better to let them terminate you - that way you can then sign on when you get that letter. Resigning as others have said could cause sanction problems.0
