Stick or ditch Focus 1.6 TDCi

Hi
Opinions please
I have a 2005 1.6 TDCi Ford Focus which I bought about 18 months ago as I was doing an annual commute of 20,000 miles, so it was bought for fuel economy. It has now 80,000 on the clock and so far had no major problems with it.
In a months time I will be leaving my job and will only require the car for short journeys and maybe once a month 90 mile journey. Having read a few threads on here that this engine is not good and a bit of a timebomb should I get rid of it? and if so what for? Need a car same size as focus and have a budget of £4,000
I do realise the cheapest option is to stick with what you have but in this case do you think it is worth it?
Thanks in advance for any replies

If you've been looking after it - servicing on schedule, preventative maintenance, etc, and its otherwise going well, thens it probably ok.
The problems seem to come when they are neglected - EGR valve failure, air flow meter, split turbo hose, all cause the turbo to have to work much harder, so can contribute towards its failure.
You could always sell it and buy an equivalent focus petrol, chances are you should actually have money back into your pocket if you do it right.0 -
has it got the pug engine in it? if so off load it.0

I have had it serviced twice since I have owned it due to the milleage I do. It also came with FSH. Is the petrol Focus more reliable?0 -
puy it this way it wont require a new engine if it is the pug engine you have in it, those engine have a flag on them and the first sing of trouble is when the turbo goes, no one will honour a warranty on a turbo for a pug engined ford 1.6 diesels because there is a technical sheet on it that requires either new engine or half the engine to be replaced to cure the problem of turbo failure. ford knows about the problem but wont do anything with a vehicle outside a warranty period that goes caput due to this problem.
cant go wrong with a petrol focus.0 -
Apart from poor fuel economy.0

And they're pretty much all as a result of doing mostly short journeys or not servicing them. A car that has done 20k a year with this engine won't have those problems.
If those TDCi engines were so bad there wouldn't be 100,000s of Ford Transits with 200k+ on the clock.0 -

It could be that particular engine, the transits are 2.5L if i am not mistaken.0 -
Does your engine have a DPF?
If so as long as you do a long journey at least once a month to clear that it should be ok.
You dont want to change your car to get another one that could be worse.0
