Cashing a cheque from oz

Not sure if posted in right thread but i recently got a cheque from a company in australia and the only way they could pay was by cheque.
I need to know how best to cash it without getting charged high for it my main bank is halifax well merged with my bank or i have nationwide.
Who would be the best on these two i know that when i have had payment transfered etc by overseas with like nationwide no charges but halifax does, so i am thinking maybe nationwide would be best.
Any advice would be great,i did not want a cheque because of a charge to convert it but i had no option, its also in dollars.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

    I hope that's not $Aus, if it should be $US? :)

I think the best thing to do would be to ask both banks/building societies for the exact charge they would make and then decide.

It does seem from discussions on the various boards on MSE that bank charges etc can even vary from branch to branch or be dependent on your own banking history. That would mean that any advice we offered might not be right in your case.

Be prepared though for some high charges, the last foreign cheque i had was in US dollars and Barclays wanted more to convert it and pay it into my account than the cheque was worth, about £12 at the time.

It's been a long while since I used them (and took a little finding) but Auctionpix used to be a good place to offload foreign cheques. Set up by an old hand EBayer way back in the midst of time.

Speak to them, and see what they say... There's a live chat option :)

In fact, they were good for ANYTHING EBay related. :)

They only do US$ cheques and Euro cheques but if you can get special treatment then I'd definitely recommend them :)

Sent a couple of cheques to them a couple of weeks ago and got paid the same week. Great service!

Good Point ..... I only ever had $US cheques to offload, from our cousins across the pond who cannot read and are worse still at geography. :p
