When can I switch suppliers?
Hi
I'm on a fixed contract with nPower, due to expire in early February 2013, when I will be moved to their more expensive standard tariff.
I'm obviously keen to switch asap - but wonder how long it all takes. If I try and switch now with 5 weeks until the fixed tariff expires will the process start and I'll be charged the exit fee? Do I have to wait until the fixed tariff has fully expired or is there a lead-in time in this final month when I can start the process and move to a cheaper rate without a fee?
Thanks.

Wait until 2 weeks remain in the contract then start the switch.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

To play safe, look around but don't initiate the switch until your are within the cooling off period for the new supplier from the end of your nPower contract (usually 10 working days). The new supplier will not let nPower know you're leaving until the cooling off period has elapsed.
It typically takes 4-6 weeks to complete the switch. During that time you will be on nPower's standard tariff, but the extra you'll be paying won't be a huge cost - probably less than the exit penalty.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. It can take as little as 3 weeks however more usually it can be 4-6 weeks.
It is definately too early to switch now, personally I would leave it until around 14 days before your tarrif ends.0
