PS - every Decemeber for the last 5 on here we've had a thread claiming December will be dire.

Every Jan / Feb we get a thread informing us 'Xmas fears were overdone, as shoppers went into last minute overdrive'.

Someone PM when the Jan / Feb antidote to December retail blues thread is posted.

You make it sound as if you have some God given right to live as you like, despite millions of folk on Earth going hungry.

Thank God I dont have to live beside you with an attitude like you have.

You have not got a clue as to my circumstances. that have brought me to this regrettable course of action.

Many people can't really downsize because they are already in relatively small properties and the cost do so would wipe out any benefit.

My reason is that quite recently I have lost two members of my household and cannot afford to keep up the property.

I have a relative who is presently considering downsizing who never intended to. Has until recently thought they would be able to manage where they are. Escalating costs, particularly energy and assistance with up keep, due to some immobility, are making them think again.

It is heart wrenching decision for them as that is where the family grew up. Although some capital will be released it will be a lot less than expected, less demand for larger property yet still vibrant demand in "retirement" properties in the locality.

It's regrettable you've lost some family, it comes to us all, but I'm sorry how is this any different to the majority of us that one day expect to downsize for all sorts of reasons?

The post I was responding to seemed to imply you had some sort of expectation you would never need to downsize and that somehow this was partly Government failure, given the thread we are in.

All Im saying is it is part and parcel of life with all it's ups and downs that we each take responsibility and do not have this expectation that the state should provide.

How do you know I have not just lost someone, and could equally marshall this into an argument? Perhaps I choose not to. As I say downsizing is part and parcel of life and not some reflection of a failed economy.
  • Well that's very nice that is. Very Chritstmassy.

    Merry Christmas.

.. and a happy new year to you.

It makes sense to think about downsizing in retirement. Apart from the financial consideration a big place takes a lot of effort and energy to maintain and those two things are in increasingly short supply with increasing age. Also makes sense to move nearer to amenities if necessary -- doctor, dentist, pharmacy, food shops, post office etc.

Sure thing, but thats life. We cant all have some sort of perfect retirment somehow bought about by the state.

The world has caught up with Britian and now wants a cut of resources, hence price rises.

Why not celebrate all those years we had artifically low prices thanks to us being one of the few advanced nations, able to take resources out of the thrild world at will?

I think that it would have been more respectful if you had not replied to my last post, instead of making 'your own interpritation as to my comments' I may not be as educated as you seem to think that you are but respect I do have over you.
