Hi
for the last few weeks I have been having many and varied problems with my PC. I am running XP home.
It began when it simply wouldn't boot up at all. The only way I could get it to boot up was to re-install Windows XP service pack 2 from a disc. After that it would boot up happily and perform normally at least 6 or 7 times.
While it was running I defragged, ran scan disk (showed no problems with system), scanned for viruses (using CA anti-virus), ran CCleaner etc.
After a few times logging on as normal the same thing would happen and I would have to re-install the service pack again before being able to get online.
After having this particular problem 4 or 5 times and going through the same actions booting up has been less of a problem.
However, I now have no active desktop and attmepts to restore do not work. System re-store does not help with any of the problems I have mentioned so far.
In addition the screen freezes fairly often and control/alt/del doesn't work so have to re-boot. A new problem is that the system is becoming slower and slower so that it is taking so long to load some pages that I have time to go off and play a game while waiting.
Its a relatively elderly PC, about 4 years, a generic make with no name (bought it at a computer fair and it has been very reliable mostly). I use it every day for at least 4 hours. My daughter plays some graphic heavy games sometimes.
Don't think there is any more i can tell you. But I would really appreciate some help as its getting more and more frustrating.
thanks.
I use Virgin media broadband

Actually NTL - sorry, Virgin Media - have become slower and slower recently for pages to load... But it sounds as though you have a more serious problem than that, and if the slowness is affecting everything then it sounds more like a hardware problem

What do the diagnostics show in terms of RAM etc?
Thanks to all who post constructively.

when you say reinstall the service pack, do you mean reintall windows? Are you making sure windows is patched, and AV is upto date after doing a reinstall?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Re:RAM - can't really remember what it said but I think it was something like 79% of memory available.

No, I just re-install the service pack which I have on disc. Otherwise patches are installed automatically via MSN. I update my AV when reminded or when worried, like now.

Earlier tonight (this morning lol) I ran one of those real time virus checks via Symantec. I wish I hadn't because its removal tools are impossible to understand (for me anyway) and all seem to require Norton or Symantec disks which I don't have.
The scan came up with 6 bugs all of which seem to be related to adware (although I use SpywareBlaster).

    This is what Symantec reported:
    C:\WINDOWS\tsad.dll is infected with Adware.TSAdBot
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\WONWebLauncherControl.ocx is infected with SecurityRisk.Downldr
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\osrouter.dll is infected with Spyware.Marketscore
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\osmim.dll is infected with Spyware.Marketscore
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xmltok.dll is infected with Trackware.SAHAgent
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\BO2802040113.dll is infected with Adware.VirtualBouncer
    C:\Program Files\OpiStat\OpiStat\OpiStat_update_en_4.60.44.0_MEGAPANEL_EUROPE.exe is infected with Spyware.Netrat
    C:\Program Files\FileSubmit\Horse Fever\NLNP38.exe is infected with Adware.IGetNet

So I presume these are my problems (??) but now don't know how to get rid of them. Neither Spyware Blaster nor CA av has isolated them.
