Powerline Adapters

Yesterday I was upgraded to BT Infinity. :D :j

Connecting my laptop to the hub via Ethernet I get a download speed of 75Mb

I live in an apartment over two floors in a 16th century listed Manor House known affectionately as Toad Hall and the walls are 3 foot thick!

Downstairs, where the hub is located, I'm getting 74.5Mb via wireless. :D However, my office/study is upstairs and although I can see my wireless network, more on that later, I use Powerline adapters to get the network up there as I'm not allowed to drill holes or cable up the outside and medieval builders weren't big on cable ducts. :rotfl:

Using my existing adapters I'm only getting 20Mb which was fine until yesterday when my download speed was 8Mb. I've had the adapters years and I'm assuming that they aren't as fast as they could be. Connecting via wireless I'm getting 24Mb which is good but irritating when you've got 75Mb downstairs.

So, it looks like some new high speed Powerline adapters are in order.

What do the panel recommend? Makes to avoid?

Thanks

Not a recommendation as I don't use these myself but a pair 500Mhz units are available for the same price as most 200Mhz here I don't think that you need to worry about particular makes, as they all use the same chipsets internally.

That sounds about right :) I shall have to do some Googling.

Just changed to infinity option 1, now get 20 Mbps wireless download and just under 30 Mbps Ethernet. Hub is located about 20ft from where I use the laptop so have just ordered a powerline adaptor kit from Amazon. Many thanks for the info as it saves either moving the hub or running Ethernet cables.

Received my adapters today and most disappointed that they don't work, the reason why they don't work is due to the way the house is wired and I rewired it :(. After having an extension built, with a new lounge and bedroom, I wired the new extension to a new consumer unit leaving the rest of the house being fed from the original consumer unit and guess what the home hub is located in the old part and the laptop in the new lounge, so it's up into the loft to change the home hub supply to the new consumer unit. Just a warning to others who may have had their power supply split.

I found that the Solwise 1Gbps home plug adapters didn't work in my house but the 500 Mbps were fine.

    I got the 500Mbps ones from http://www.faculty-x.net
  • I use Develo 500's
  • Not sure if a WiFi Range Extender will help to resolve your issues, as it should extend the range of your wireless network: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WN3000RP-Universal-Range-Extender/dp/B0055Y6PUA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1A7W4O5N9PCV6&coliid=IFVSGM7UJSIXR

I have homeplugs at present as some of my kit (e.g. HDD Recorder) hasn't got the wireless option and therefore need to use the ethernet port, but would prefer the wireless option.

Pleased to say that have now changed the wiring over and now get Ethernet speeds of up to 39 Mbps, so the power line adapters work :)
