Vine weevil grubs
Horrible things I know but can anyone confirm that they are active during Autumn and winter as I have a quantity of spent compost which I want to spread on the garden, I figure that it will be safe to use it as I should now be able to check for the grubs and that the egg phase which is impossible to check for as they are so small is over?

Yes, they are active all year round. Avoid spreading round any plants that are known to be their favourite food, especially near potted plants. Spread thinly and the birds will look for the grubs.0

You will see them easily enough in spent compost as you spread it, unless you have tonnes of the stuff. But don't forget that spent compost is rarely 'spent,' just maybe not suitable for the same or fussy, demanding plants. I would be destitute if I didn't re-use a lot of mine, suitably refreshed.

Personally, I enjoy popping vine weevil grubs, so long as the juice doesn't hit my glasses. :cool:0
