I have just bought a new all singing all dancing pc And have started to burn the odd dvd. Now the dvd burner I have only uses dvd+r discs as far as I know.
The problem is I have just bought a Portable dvd player and that seems to only play dvd-r discs!
What I need to know is, can I somehow get around this so either my burner burns + and - or my dvd player plays both + and -? Or have I just shelled out for a dvd player that doesnt play what I want it to?
By the way the dvd player is a Ventura 6.5 inch same as in argos.
Cheers,
Pete.

What model is the dvd drive in the PC? (Assuming Windows XP do, Control panel > System > Hardware > Device manager > Click + sign by DVD/CD-Rom Drives)
Is there anything in Venturer manual stating it will only play DVD-R? If the comment "seems to only play dvd-r discs" is from practical experience you could try another brand of disc perhaps.
If equipment is definately as you describe I think you'll have to buy a new dvd burner.
There's a hack code for a Venturer if you're interested in this thread (check it's same model number as yours):

Hi Onzey,
It's a brand new system from Dell running XP, the model of the DVD drive is a TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E.
In the manual it says cd-r cd-rw compatible no mention of cd+.
This is the 2nd brand of disc thats been tried
The model number of the ventura dvd player is psv166w where as the one in the link is ps166w would it be the same the only differance I can see is mine is the 6.5 screen and the one talked about is 4.5. will the hack allow me to use dvd +'s?
With it being a new pc i'm sure if I replaced the dvd drive it would invalidate my warrenty so thats a no go'er. Or is it a case of flogging the dvd player and getting a new one that playes + and - ?
Thanks,

The hack is for region code.
That Teac +R only DVD burner is holding you back. It is a major source of complaint amongs dell users. You can temporarily swap it for a DVD+/-R untill your PC dies and has to be sent back.

Bloody thing! >:(
Any recommendations for a decent one must come in black
or would it just be easier to sell the dvd player on e-bay and get another that plays both.
Thanks for your help lads.

This one gets good reviews.

The 16x media is due soon, the dual layer stuff next January. It will cost a bit though. Better value might be had by giong for older models in the range without the dual layer capability.
An OEM drive does not come with anything. What DVD burning software do you have?0 -
Hi Joe,
Looks like I'll be taking a look at that one.
I'm using Sonic which came already installed on the pc, but have just today been given a copy of nero 6. So I shall be installing that later today.
