How much do you think he should be paid then, in order not to upset you and the rest of the great british public?
624K + 250K housing allowance doesn't seem exaggerated for a position like governor of the BoE.
Isn't he really a figure head with a couple of levers to watch over?
The real work will be done bey some else, he will pull one lever see what happens, pull another see what happens. If he pulls one too much and messes up he simply walks away with his contractual package.
Your pretty shrewd I am sure you could do it for less with his advisors on hand. I am not been sarcastic either.
Oh and sign off some letters that someone has written for him/you explaining why Inflation and GDP "targets" have been missed again.;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

That's pretty standard pay and relocation package for that position - what's the issue graham?0

Sure, but isn't that applicable to the majority of CEO's?
Or even any senior management up from a certain level?0 -

I think that most of the working population blame the banks for the Credit Crunch and find that wages/bonuses like this is considered obscene.0 -
is it a tax thing? would employer/employee pay less tax on a housing allowance than on plain old pay?FACT.0

You make him sound like some sort of magician. Some others have made out that he's doing this as some kind of charity mission...as if he's got to be compensated for being taken away from what he loves. I wish my boss felt like that. THIS is where the whole banking culture \ expenses scandal went wrong with this sense of pure and utter entitlement.
What's he going to do that no one else has thought of? What makes him so special that we will stand out amongst our EU peers? Why is no other country banging down his door to grab him? Blimey, companies would be begging to have him for this sort of money wouldn't they....howcome they are not offering him millions? Why are the banks not offering him multi million pound contracts? What can he do to combat all that stuff that people have banged on about time after time on this forum......the fact that inflation is apparently all coming from places we cannot control and growth is determined by the rest of the world?! (Remember, this is what so many have said for so long to excuse the BOE on here but now seemingly all's changed?).
His hands are tied just as much as the people he sits around a table with. It's a vote, or that's what we are led to believe, with him being the one dragged out to explain why they all voted the way they did.
Now, I don't know what level of salary that should attract. But is he really nearly 3 times better than Mervyn? Does he have 3x more influence? If he does, great. But on what are we basing this?
What gripes me, is not the salary. It's the allowances. It's the way he's seen as so special, he has to have an allowance of 250k a YEAR, for housing while at the same time, people under 25 are being told they won't be eligible for housing benefit, sorry. That's gross greed. Who NEEDS a house as big as that money can achieve?
Now, before you start, as wotsthat did with the NEET rubbish, I'm not saying he should be put in a B&B. But for heavens sake, 250k a YEAR? Ok, so lets remove the tax to be fair. It's still 137k for living accomodation. And this is a supplement....which suggests he'll be paying some towards his accomodation.
It's greed beyond the extreme. Surely no one would actually spend all that on living expenses anyway....so as he'll be pocketing a large amount of it, why not just call it....I dunno....a salary?
The bile that is thrown to public sector workers on this forum..... where's that gone? Or is it just nurses and firemen people detest?
And I bet the BOE never had any unqualified, unsuitable, unwilling people sent under quote from the jobcentre wasting everyones time either!0 -
Why doesn't the Government buy him a house....maybe they don't trust their own policies...;)
£2m home...cost £10,000 a month....in 5 years...only owe £1.75m...plus HPI..
Why not let him one use of the many grace and favour properties in London that might otherwise get used by a Cabinet Minister or even Government Officials.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

Other public servants "suffer" benefit in kind for this sort of arrangement and see their pay reduced. Yet when it comes to the "elite" it seems this type of arrangement is out of scope. Student doctors see their pay reduced for accomodation within hospitals etc.
Look at company cars. Were all taxed on them as it's of benefit to us. Even if the company owns them, you can't just have them for your personal use. MPs and the elite can though.0 -

Yep in a large corporate, but their targets will no doubt be more challenging and harder in terms of time and profit.
Appreciate the smaller the enterprise the greater influence they may be able to apply.
In this case I believe he will be even better protected."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Apparently they think this man is the best person for the job.
If the rumours are true that he is considering changing the MPC's remit from 2% CPI to a nominal GDP target, then I would have to seriously question that assumption.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
