Mark Carney, the incoming governor of the Bank of England is getting paid twice what Meryvn King was paid. £624,000 a year with pension taken into account. £480,000 a year without.

However, it's now been unveiled that the poor bloke can't afford UK housing. ;)

Therefore, he will get an additional £250,000 per year of our money to pay for his housing costs.

The allowance is designed to allow him to maintain a similar lifestyle to that which he had in Canada.

Pure brilliance. How stupid can the government / BOE really be. It's like they thrive on the public backlash!

Apparently they think this man is the best person for the job. So what's the alternative - take on a NEET because they're available straightaway and live with their parents.

He pays for his housing out of his salary?

Come on wotsthat, you can't seriously back this one up? The man is going to be setting out how we all live within the economic landscape, yet straight away, HE is demanding a living expense ON TOP of his salary....a living expense of 250k a YEAR. He's not gonna have a clue about the everyday person.

At least were all in this together.

Even at my level (60k. Year, low management position) I'd expect to be paid a living allowance for relocating to another country. This is pretty standard stuff.

That was the deal he negotiated to agree to move to the UK. It's all been signed off so clearly those in charge of the recruitment process think he's worth it. If they thought it was too much they could have taken on their second choice candidate instead.

I hope he is worth it.

This guy is in great demand. TBH I think his package is pretty reasonable especially given he is being prized away from his home nation with all the upheaval that entails.

I am far more vexed by the pay of BBC 'stars' to be frank. Did you know Kirsty 'leftwing' Wark of Newsnight got £400,000 for a few weeks consultancy work on the design of the Scots Parilament building. Utterly disgusting greed. Have you seen how much the socialist stars such as the super spoiled Steve Coogan charge?

I agree - given he is the equivalent of a CEO his package looks fairly reasonable. OK it's higher than the current guy but hopefully this one will be worth it!

Normally I agree with your posts, but not this one. If he's in great demand, then let someone else have him.

Personally I don't want anyone who is ex-Goldman Sachs running the country.

Couldn't agree more. Having no choice but to pay the licence fee then see it doled out to scum like Frankie Boyle is a joke quite frankly.

Long overdue that the BBC was forced to stand or fall on it's own merits. It's full of adverts anyway, for it's own programmes (what is even the point of that?)

They even do the commercial radio ploy of ramping up the volume on their adverts for themself, hence if you have something like 5 live on at a tolerable volume, every 15 minutes it'll be disrupted by that moron Alan Greene screaming so loud it's almost pure distortion.

Savile-gate has illustrated what a crap institution the BBC is. Cancel the Licence Fee & let it stand or fall on it's merits like every other station. That might actually result in some decent TV as opposed to thousands of programmes about cooking.
  • £250k a year for housing. That is kind of insulting.

It'd be better presentationally [imo] just to add £250k to his salary [making a total of £874k or whatever] & justify it simply by saying that the candidate wants this much [to spend, or save, according to his tastes] & could get it elsewhere, so they think it's worth paying it. Not a crazy stance to take.

Adding a housing allowance seems to imply 'need' somehow, to me anyway.

Prime London is massively overpriced... residential yields are around 3% [e.g. see this link http://www.spearswms.com/property/36022/prime-london-residential-market-remains-resilient-in-the-face-of-recession.thtml] so we're talking about an £8m house. That is a very, very serious house. I doubt that all that many of the newly crowned Goldman Sachs London-based partners ever aspire to live in a place like that [although they'll be able to afford to buy one for cash soon enough if they stick it out], and this guy is a public servant.

So it all seems a bit odd?
    FACT.

    No it hasn't.
A housing allowance was agreed as part of the package, simple as that.
