For a better range of choice you could consider a built in oven? However, once you've had a built in oven you will hate having to practically crawl on the floor with regular cookers every time you want to see inside it or add/remove something. I really miss my built in oven from the last house.

I have never had a single oven with an incorporated grill - but my sister did and got rid of it - she bought a cooker with an eye level grill.

We used to have an oven and hob and separate grill on the wall - that was good - then we had an oven and hob where the grill was separate to the oven - liked that but the oven was too small.

We now have an electric oven (wall mounted) and hob - and the oven is actually 2 ovens - 1 large and 1 small, the small one can be used as either an oven (where it's heated in exactly the same way as the large oven) or a grill (where an element in top gets hot).

I like the ovens but hate the hob and am contemplating either an induction hob or calor gas hob - we don't have mains gas where we live now.

I had a single oven put in when we moved to this house 4 years ago. The kitchen is very small and I thought a double wouldn't fit. Hated it. Last week we got a double oven and put it in the bank of three big floor to ceiling cupboards on the opposite end of the kitchen to the hob turned the old oven space into a cupboard. It is wonderful, the grill is at eye level, no bending down to floor level to use oven or clean it and I can use the oven and grill at the same time. It's a New World and brought in a sale. It was a hassle but worth it.

My DS1 needed an oven so I could justify the expense by giving him the old one!!

  • Thanks everyone,
It HAS to be a freestanding cooker, as we had the kitchen done last year (about 3months after buying the cooker I HATE) and have very beautiful granite tops, that would be impossible to get a hob inset into without completely replacing them. So am looking for the best freestanding induction cooker, with at least catalytic liners, and can only find the 2 double oven ones, and the de deitrich single....
  • Can't help you with freestanding cooker but I can confirm that an induction hob is the way to go. So easy to clean, looks sleek and modern and doesn't use much electric. I would never use another type of hob. I have a built in oven with grill and matching oven/microwave from Jo&n Lewis with 3 year guarantee. I find JL very helpful, it doesn't cost anything to ask for advice.
My secret fantasy is having 2 men....
    1 cooking and 1 cleaning.

For the past few years I've had a cooker with single oven with a separate low-level grill - I don't think I could be doing with the one oven with a grill element in the top :undecided.

I'm about to move house and would love to get a new cooker with an eye-level grill, but I can't justify the added expense after buying new carpets :(.

I get very nervous when my grandkids are around the cooker - plus it means that you can clearly see what's cooking without constantly bending down or removing the grill-pan to check.

However, I DO have a Halogen Oven which is great for grilling AND roasting - it's almost the same as having two 'proper' ovens. Economical to run, you can see what's happening to your food and often cooks quicker than a 'main oven' :D.
