Single vs double oven?

I need some OS opinions. I currently have (and have always had, as they are my preference) a double oven, with grill on the top. I once had a single oven, with the grill as part of that oven and I hated it.

However, with my latest cooker, although only 18mo old - I HATE it. I HATE the knobs, the fact the display is impossible to keep clean, and that it has stupid vents on the back of the hob so steam goes all up the wall from the oven, or causes pools of water if you leave a pan in front on them (on the back ring) The oven is OK, catalytic liners on sides, tops and back, so its only the glass and the bottoms I have to clean.

SO, OH has said, as we both hate the cooker, lets get a new one. As there is nothing ACTUALLY wrong with it, I am reluctant, but could be swayed by an induction hob (we can't have gas, well, we can but it would be WAY too awkward to get it to where we want!) (we can afford it, not getting into debt, would just use savings)

But it seems pretty hard to find the perfect one. It must have at least catalytic liners, so that makes only 2 double oven induction cookers-one a beko (UGLY) one a AEG (V pretty, looks easy to clean, but has those damn vents at the back of the hob :( ) But there is a de deitrich which is FAB, and pyrolytic cleaning-so that rocks, but is only a single oven (and is discontinued, so need to find someone who stocks it)

ANYWAYS, I've rambled enough, basically I want to know, really, how bad is it nowadays to only have the one oven? I cook a lot, but rarely use the top oven as an oven, but I do grill things like lamb chops, whilst also using the oven for say, potatoes, or cauli cheese etc, which I can't do in a single oven. I also grill bacon. And I like to have a separate grill pan, which I can line, and use fat trappers, but if it didn't live in the top oven it would take up lots of cupboard space

Sorry, now the ramble is truly over :D:o

  • Sorry, but a double oven for me every time. Why don't you have a look and see if there are any reviews of the ovens you are looking at. It might help you decide what to go for.

Have you thought about getting a separate oven and ceramic hob? That's what I ended up doing. Just have the hob inset into the worktop above the oven. Would never have a single oven again, had one previously and hated not being able to use the grill and oven at the same time.

I couldn't manage with a single oven with grill incorporated either.

We've just bought a new cooker, and ended up going for a double oven and a separate grill too!
  • I have a fagor induction hob and love it, it was in this new house when we moved in 2 1/2 years ago. We have no gas here but tbh I would now have induction every time. I already had stainless steel pans so no problem there. Built under I have a neff double oven and really dislike it. I dislike having to kneel on the floor to see what is in the bottom fan oven and I dislike not having the full oven cooking capacity eg a whole turkey would be a problem. Top oven is ok but that is all. I have always had a single oven and never had to go on my knees to see how things were cooking. As soon as mine shows any sign of breaking down, then I will get a single oven but will be very fussy as I want to be able to bake perfect sourdough bread and a fan stops it in its tracks.

I will always choose an induction now, so energy efficient and responsive and a doddle to wipe with an eco cloth

Since my last kitchen remake I have a single oven and I HATE it, have also got a small counter top oven and a combination oven/microwave so manage to get by...mind you I hate the gas hob I got even more so there will be a huge turnaround whenever the pocket can stand it...will go for double oven and induction hob!

  • I have a double electric oven and gas hob part, both with grill functions and the large one is fan assisted. I love it, smaller one when I cook small things and big one for bigger cooking , and both for bigger occasions. I dont really use the grill though as I use a George Forman. Personally I wouldnt like to go back to a single oven. The worst part is being stainless steel so is a pain to keep shiny...

  • I just purchased a red leisure double oven with 4zone induction hob, brand new£500 inc delivery via southern electrics ebay :) double for me everytime
  • If you have space like we did when redesigning our kitchen, go for 2 single ovens one on top of each other. With a bit of research at the time it actually worked out to be similar price to the double ovens but you get two full sized ovens instead of one and half which the 'double' ovens really are.

We have a single oven with incorporated grill but hardly use the grill, too awkard, normally just use our cuisinart (george forman type thing) for grilled food. The glass hob is seperate, fitted into the worktop. Its great, really good to keep looking shiney!
